Yes, I Am Broke
Well, I went on a spending spree before I left for Texas and bought tons of freakin’ movies. We’re gonna knock out 2 of them (Hostel and Wolf Creek), right here.
Now, both of these are supposed to be based on true events. We know how that goes, though. You take a real story and embellish it for the screen. It’s the nature of film. But let’s move on.
Wolf Creek: Yet another film I fully intended to see in the theater and missed.
Pretty much a “torture movie”, like Hostel, but more serious with its theme.
Again, 3 kids go on a trip. This time 2 girls and a guy in Australia are on there way to a huge rave or something and are road-tripping. They stop at the Wolf Creek meteor crater and when they go to leave, their car won’t start. Lucky for them a friendly guy with a truck tows them to his camp to fix their car for them. OR IS IT LUCKY FOR THEM? Yeah, it’s not lucky for them. But you knew that. Turns out that the guy is a sick fuck that gets off on raping, torturing and just flat out killing people.
Now, that sounds simplistic, I agree. But the direction and acting really pulls this one through. Whereas Hostel was content to just kinda float through, this one really tries to get into the shit. And I think it works. Here’s why:
What I remember from Hostel is the drinking and fucking and maybe one or two intense scenes.
I remember the whole damn movie for Wolf Creek. And it’s disturbing what happens. Even though it spends a lot of time getting to the shit you’re expecting. You really do cheer for our characters to survive. And for our villain to get what he deserves.
Yes, it’s not as much fun, but we’re talking about horror, here.
So, I have to give both films a 5. They’re two different films, entirely.
I love Hostel, but I thought Wolf Creek was the better crafted film. Sorry, Eli. Love ya, man.
