For those who are really interested in observing and learning about different cultures, Kerala has much to offer. Kerala's history and culture dates back centuries. Ancient rulers of this wonderful State took special interest in promoting the art and culture of this region. Kerala the narrow fertile strip on the south west coast of India, is sandwiched between the Western Ghats and the Arabian sea. The Western Ghats, with their dense forests and extensive ridges , have sheltered Kerala from many mainland invaders, and the long coastline encouraged maritime contact with the outside world, resulting in an intriguing blend of cultures. The state's sheltered location has allowed many distinctive customs, art forms and festivals to thrive. Onam, which the state of Kerala officially celebrates for four days in late August or early September to coincide with the harvest and the New Year by local calender, is a cultural celebration of a nostalgic golden age of the mythical King Mahabali. Besides typical Kerala vegetarian lunch (Onasadhya), folk dances and courtyard floral decorations at home, the festivities include, many cultural programmes like elephant processions, dance recitals, boat races and traditional games. Raja Ravi Varma's paintings, world famous dance forms like Kathakali and Mohiniattam , Sculptures and great Temple Architecture, handicraft items, Ayurveda and Yoga are some of the unique and great attractions you will find in this State. |
