Classic Japanese ceramics are sparsely decorated. In this tradtion, only the front of this Ginger Jar is decorated with a red hibiscus in full bloom, another just budding with a bit of green foliage and a green and gold butterfly approaching to feed.
The polychrome colors are applied on a black background using a combination of transfers, brush and air-brush. The lid has a single red hibiscus in bloom with foliage. The hibiscus stamens are all gold, and all the images are outlined in gold.
This lovely item has the appearance of other Otagiri flowered ceramic Ginger Jars and Ginger Jars made in the 1980's it was likely made then.
The bottom is clearly marked in gold: "Camellia" in script and "© Otagiri, Japan" in larger block letters.
This Ginger Jar is in excellent condition, and except for the finial having been repaired which is not noticable, there with no other chips, cracks, crazing or repairs, and no missing paint or gilding.
Otagiri was headquartered in San Francisco, but all its wares were made in Japan. Started just after World War II, Otagiri helped Japan recover from the war and find new markets. The company was sold in 1994 to Enesco and in the 1980's to 1994, it changed its concentration to the manufacture of Ginger Jars, and other lesser pieces.
