The Club was the idea of four ardent postcard collectors who recognised the widespread local interest in the hobby. On Thursday 18^th December 1984 in the Withy Trees Hotel, Lytham Road, Fulwood, they decided to call a public meeting to consider the formation of a club in the Preston area. This was agreed, and a public meeting was arranged at which 27 interested persons attended on Tuesday January 8^th 1985 at the Fulwood Social Centre in the grounds of the Institute for the Blind in Lytham Road, Fulwood. The Red Rose Postcard Club was born. The club flourished and in 1987 a book was published containing 100 of the best postcard views of Preston. Monthly meetings were held and membership grew to over 100. To satisfy demand postcard fairs were held successfully at Canterbury Hall on Garstang Road, Preston. Speakers, annual subsidized trips to big fairs at York and London were arranged, and regular issues of the club magazine “Delta” distributed. Our postcard fairs are held on the last Saturday in January, March, June and September at Barton Village Hall, Garstang Road, Barton. The Club meets on the third Wednesday in each month at 7.00 pm at the Social Centre of Our Lady & St. Edward Church in Marlborough Drive, Fulwood. Dealers’ stocks are often available. We have held auctions, and have annual competitions when members use display boards to show their interests. Prizes are vouchers to be exchanged for postcards at meetings or club postcard fairs. The Club AGM is held in March and a free Hot Pot Supper is provided. The December meeting is always held on the second Wednesday of the month when the Club Christmas Party is held. Wives and partners are invited to join in the games and excellent free buffet. The Club is recognised as the largest postcard club in the North of England. Free valuations are available at mutually convenient times for large and small postcard collections by experts who are also club members.
