Topographical Cards.

There are many ways of classifying postcards. One enormous class is topographical. These cards show our towns and villages, sometimes with animated scenes.   The topographical class may be subdivided into real photograph and printed. Cards in the former category were often produced in small quantities by local photographers. They are, in some cases, highly desirable because they provide a fascinating insight into a bygone age. Collectors will sometimes be prepared to pay high prices for real photograph cards. Shown above is a superb photographic view of Corporation Street in Clitheroe. The photographer is alas quite unknown, but he was probably one of the local photographers of whom there were several. The view is little changed today.

The coloured card, showing the library and bank in Clitheroe would have been produced in hundreds or thousands so that even today it is not a scarce card.

Subject Cards

The other category into which many thousands of cards fall is that of subject cards. The scope for a collection of subject cards is limited only by the imagination of the collector. The transport themes of trains, ships and motor vehicles are some of the most popular themes but collections can be made of military, royalty, sport ….. the list is virtually endless.
