It is not easy to frame a precise definition of a modern postcard although some collectors follow the rule of thumb that modern postcards date from the 1950s onwards. Another distinction of modern cards is the size. The “Golden Age” card and others about to , say, the 1950s was usually 3˝ x 5 ins. Moderns, however, are usually the “continental” size, i.e. 4 x 6 ins. Clearly the postcard you buy while on holiday in the Isle of Wight falls into the category of modern. There is not much interest in cards like this and they are worth very little.

Another kind of modern card is the specialist card beautifully produced for collectors and generally sold at a rather higher price than a typical seaside view.
