tony was born anthony deklan james slattery on 9 november, 1959, in england. he is the youngest of five children, three of whom are triplets. tony's parents immigrated to england from ireland, and settled in stonebridge, a housing estate in the north of london. he was schooled at gunnersbury boys' grammar school, and then went on to win a scholarship to cambridge university, where he studied mideival and modern languages. it was in university that he joined the footlights dramatic club, along with the likes of emma thompson, sandi toksvig, richard vranch, and stephen fry. clive anderson was a part of the club as well, back in 1975, when he held the position of president - a position tony also held in the early eighties.
after cambridge, tony went on to perform at various shows with richard vranch, whom he befriended in the footlights. |
he then went on to carry out his most recognized role, as a regular contestant on the extremely popular improvisation show, whose line is it anyway?. he appeared in 7 seasons of the show, along with richard vranch, mike mcshane, paul merton, john sessions, stephen fry, steve frost, josie lawrence, and many others. while he did not appear on every taping of the show, tony made appearances in a slew of other tv shows, films, radio, etc (see appearances).
for the next few years, tony was out of the public eye, which was caused by a breakdown due to severe clinical depression. he recalls that after nearly 13 years of working non-stop, it crept up on him out of nowhere. however, he is recovering and can now look back and reflect on his experiences.
he is starting to work again, recently taking over the position of rector at dundee university, in scotland. tony is trying to stay commited to this position, and continues to support and encourage the students to the best of his ability. in early '99, he re-emerged on radio and television, appearing in various television and radio shows, as well as performing live with the comedy store players in london. most recently, he has appeared in the 2000 film, the wedding tackle. things are looking up for mr.slattery, and we certainly wish him all the best.
