NICOLE PHONE HOME: IT'S TIME TO GO
In the third elimination of the competition, the strikingly beautiful Nicole, the 22 year old from Murrieta, California, was eliminated after a tumultuous ride. Having faced an emotional confrontation on the phone with her boyfriend over his lack of availability to her, Nicole refused an opportunity to go to an important social event. When the judges' verdict was announced, Nicole said, "I don't have any regrets at all. There's definitely a relief that I'm going home, and it's a small one, and that would probably be just to be with my boyfriend."
SMOKING IN THE GIRLS' ROOM
After Katie's elimination, Adrianne began to feel the pressures of the competition. She had a smoke in the bathroom with Elyse, and both girls expressed their surprise that Katie was the one to go. Adrianne recalled the moment when Tyra asked, "Were you present?" for her catwalk run, and voiced her anxiety over the elimination process. While Elyse said Adrianne is taking the competition far too seriously, Adrianne admitted, "There's money issues in my family, so I really, really need this."
A few of the girls oohed and ahhed over photos of Nicole's hunky BMX pro-bike-riding boyfriend Cory. She was feeling their separation acutely, as evidenced in her numerous unanswered calls to his voicemail. Though she wanted to find some independence by entering the competition, "It's really, really-really-really hard. Really hard."
TRANSFORMERS
Tyra pointed out that there's a huge difference between "beauty in real life and beauty in the modeling industry," and she wanted to provide the girls an education in make-up application. She introduced Jay Manuel, her own personal make-up artist, and Karen Lepine, owner of Lepine Salon, to everyone. They would be in charge of some serious transformations of the girls' hair and make-up, and Tyra said, "No one will walk out looking like what they walked in."
Tyra's ideas for the girls were dramatic for some, less so for others. Elyse would get some lighter hair and a pixie cut, bleaching and extensions were for Shannon (who was initially thrilled at the idea), a sexy weave for Adrianne, and lightened hair for Robin. Adrianne was very excited about the weave, since she could never afford it, but a slack-jawed Robin balked at the prospect of lighter hair. Kesse was to get extensions, a throwback to what Tyra called "Tyra Banks hair from 1992." Nicole was also reluctant to have her hair straightened, considering she'd spent $1500 on extensions back home the day before she left for the competition. Ebony was to be shorn even shorter, and Giselle would get dramatic layers.
HAIR, THERE, EVERYWHERE
When Jay heard of Nicole's unhappiness about his choice for her new look, he advised her, "You need to do what's good for your career, not for necessarily what you like." When the team began the cutting, everyone was tense, especially Robin, who knew she didn't have a choice. She also looked unhappy when the stylist removed her old extensions, revealing to everyone that it wasn't her own hair. Adrianne perceived herself as the only girl really excited about allowing someone go to town on her hair. She noted that Nicole's vociferous complaints prevented the stylist from doing everything she'd wanted to do, and also observed that "Giselle cried" as she got her layers, "Giselle whined, Giselle moaned, Giselle groaned." Elyse loved her pixie, but the color, not so much. Frustrated with the stylist's inability to trim her hair properly, Ebony announced that she would be growing her hair back.
With that, Nicole passed from the loft out into the skyline of New York, leaving seven hopeful girls still clutching the dream. The hair transformations complete, Jay brought out bags of Revlon make-up for the girls to learn to apply for two different looks: day and night. He demonstrated false eyelashes, shadows, lipsticks, moisturizers, everything they would need. He also warned, "The make-up artist is your last front to the world, so you never want to piss them off, because they'll mess you up."
RANTING AND RAVING
That night, dissatisfaction rose to the surface for some of the girls. Ebony in particular was mortified with her hair, shouting, "It is very upsetting to an African American woman to walk into a salon and have the person do her hair incorrectly! It is very inappropriate!" As she continued her diatribe, Robin mimicked her behind her back while Elyse and Shannon looked on, trying desperately not to laugh. Robin wasn't happy either, saying, "I look like an albino prostitute." Elyse understood her unhappiness, but quipped later, "Then again, I'm not really familiar with prostitute trends." Meanwhile, poor Nicole had put aside her hair drama and resumed worrying about the fact that she still hadn't been able to reach her boyfriend.
MISS SOY LATTE?
The next morning, Jay Manuel arrived bearing gifts: four huge bags of Revlon make-up. He took to task all the girls that didn't like their hair, specifically Ebony, Nicole and Robin. He chastised Robin, saying if she didn't want to be in the game she "might as well go home and just be Miss Soymilk or whatever." With that out of the way, he told everyone that fashion maven Derek Khan would take them on a fabulous tour of high-end shops and teach them a few things about lookin' good. Following that, there was to be a competition in which the girls must transform their look from day to night, and the winner would attend an important event that night with Jay and Tyra.
Derek led the girls on their tour, and they tried on gorgeous shoes, clothing and jewelry. He strutted his stuff without a runway, and encouraged the girls to really show their assets to the fullest. Jaws dropped when Robin bought an extremely expensive pair of boots, but Robin reasoned, "Your feet are what hold you up. You must wear good shoes."
MAD MAKE-UP DASH
Everyone glammed up for the make-up challenge, but the tension ratcheted up a notch when Jay announced they would have only ten minutes to make their transformation. When the time was up, Jay's comments weren't particularly positive for any of the girls except Elyse, who did everything exactly as Jay had taught her. Elyse was chosen as the winner, and she was told she could take three other girls with her to the event that night. Grateful that they had loaned her make-up tools, she chose Adrianne and Nicole, and chose Robin after she answered a random question correctly.
To everyone's surprise, Nicole wanted to back out, saying she didn't feel well enough to go. Jay was clearly irritated, saying if she were cut, "then you go back home and do what? Work at Burger King?" That was it for Nicole, who became perturbed at Jay's comments. Even more defiant, she bailed entirely. Adrianne thought it was just because Nicole wanted to go home and call Cory, her boyfriend.
NIGHT AT THE NEW INDIA HOUSE
Robin, Elyse, Adrianne, Tyra and Jay arrived at the New India House to meet Derek and a large entourage of fashionistas influential in the industry. Though a little nervous, the girls put on an impromptu show of fashion designer Anand Jon's fashions. Two guests in particular noted that Elyse would be ideal as a runway model, and one mentioned that Robin may be suitable as a spokesmodel, while Adrianne would do well in print.
Adrianne's earlier prediction came true, and Nicole cordoned herself off in the isolation room to finally speak to the elusive Cory. An argument ensued, with Nicole berating him for being unsupportive, and Cory doing nothing to change that opinion. He admitted to using reverse psychology, saying that he was trying to be as distant as possible so she would want him more. Nicole was devastated and asked if he wanted her to drop out of the competition. His reply: "I don't know."
HARDBODIES
As the sun rose over New York City, physical trainer Jon Silverman arrived to drag the girls out of bed for an early morning workout. He loved Adrianne's enthusiasm and drive, saying she is in "phenomenal condition." As Adrianne pumped iron with gusto, Robin sneaked in much later than the rest of the girls. Jon scolded her for being late, and later berated her again for skimping on all her exercises. Everyone noticed her bad attitude, and Adrianne observed, "She gets what she wants a lot, and when she doesn't get what she wants, I think she gets upset."
SSSSSSNAKES!
Later, Tyra and Jay brought the girls to the Pier 59 Studios for extreme beauty shots (or very close-up photos) done by John Ward. Tyra pointed out that "not every model can do beauty shots, so this is a very important day to see who's going to go to the next level." Jay also explained that the shots weren't going to be average pictures, but edgy, character-driven photos that they should embrace during the sessions. Once they were spruced up with dramatic hair and body make-up, the girls were introduced to a few other models with whom they'd be posing: huge snakes! Nicole and Robin teared up out of fear, while Giselle and Adrianne both looked enthusiastic. While prepping for her shot, Robin looked queasy at the sight of the smaller red snake she'd be working with. She squirmed as the wrangler placed the animal around her neck, and said later, "The end product is glamorous, but what it takes to get to that is not so glamorous."
Dressed in white and paired with a matching snake, Elyse embraced her character, and John noted, "Elyse is very aware of her body, and she thinks about the shot." John also thought Shannon actually looked better on camera than in real life, while Giselle was very brave and beautiful with her snake. Adrianne got a wildly dramatic look called the Mask of Zorro: purple make-up sprayed all across her eyes and the bridge of her nose. Her comfort level with the large snake helped her performance immensely, and John said, "I think if I was going to book a girl today based on where they are right now, I would probably pick Adrianne. She's very beautiful, she has a good time, I think she'd be fun to work with."
MAIL CALL
Tyra Mail arrived later, announcing that another girl was to be eliminated the following day. Nicole was convinced she was staying, and Adrianne also believed she would stay too, explaining, "I just tried too damn hard this week, and I think that God's going to bless me."
BAD DAY
The next morning, Adrianne woke up extremely ill, shivering and crying in the bathroom. Giselle and Kesse both had complete sympathy, hating to see Adrianne in so much pain. She was carted off to the hospital, miserable and chilled, while the other girls got ready for the judging. Tyra explained that if Adrianne weren't present that night, the judges would have to cut her. Mustering every fiber of strength left in her severely weakened body, Adrianne faked being well after her diagnosis of severe food poisoning, just so she could get to the competition. Though determined to get back in time, she was so weak in the cab she could hardly open her eyes. Elyse wasn't surprised at Adrianne's unwavering resolve, stating with a smile, "I fully expected Adrianne to be at the judging, no matter how sick she was, I knew that she would insist on being there. She's a tough broad, as she would say in her own words."
WHO IS NEXT?
The judging began, and Tyra announced, "This week got serious. Tonight you'll see this business is no game." Regular judges Janice Dickinson, Beau Quillian and Kimora Lee Simmons were present, with Jay Manuel as the guest judge. Jay explained another contest, in which the girls would try to achieve a look similar to a particular photograph of Tyra: an edgy, messy shot with a lot of cleavage and wild hair. Everyone went for it, even Adrianne, who suffered through her make-up application. Though Adrianne was visibly sick, Janice declared, "The fact...that you showed up is what it takes to be a model, and a supermodel. Well done." The judges loved the job she did, then checked out the beauty shots from the day before. It's a resounding yes from all, topped off by Beau's ecstatic, "You look gorgeous. Very engaged."
The judges didn't love Kesse's teased-out hairdo, and Janice noted that her stance in her beauty shot was a little stiff. When it was Nicole's turn, Kimora remarked she probably could have gone further with the make-up, and Tyra said, "It was a little difficult choosing your pictures, because a lot of them didn't have a life in the eyes. That's something that you really have to work on and really try to pull out of yourself, because your eyes tend to go very dead." A disappointed Nicole took in the criticism quietly.
Next up was Elyse, who also went a little conservatively on the make-up, which surprised Beau. However, everyone loved her photos, and she said she felt much sexier in those shots than in the bikini. Shannon gave it a good shot with her look, and her photo went over extremely well. Jay mentioned her intense look, and Janice loved her attitude. When Giselle emerged, Tyra didn't like her make-up, but softened the blow by saying about her beauty shot, "I would put that up in my living room as art work." Jay said she was beautiful on the outside, and she needed to feel that way within as well.
Robin came out with hair teased to the max, and Kimora thought her look was perfect. She also loved the beauty shot, and Jay laughed, "You just give so much attitude!" Tyra reprimanded her for diva-like behavior on the makeover day, and before Robin could give attitude back, Tyra explained that in the real world, there's no "diva-ing" allowed. Last up, Ebony didn't get a good review for her makeup job from any of the judges, and then her photo came up. Ebony liked the way her skin looked, but Tyra revealed that "in the retouches, your photo was the hardest that we had to do."
Finally, the deliberations began. Adrianne, Elyse and Shannon were all given glowing marks, while Nicole's lack of dedication bothered some of the judges. Jay didn't like Giselle's lack of self-confidence, but Beau backed her look up. Robin's bad temper annoyed Jay and Tyra, and Ebony seemed too harsh for Kimora. Ultimately, the judges reached a decision.
FILE IN, TAKE OFF
The girls filed into the room one more time, the desperation, the nervousness, the fear just as palpable as it had been the past two eliminations. No one could be completely secure about what the outcome would be, where their fate would lead them. Tyra held seven pictures in her hand, and only those seven would continue on. Somebody's face was missing from the precious stack.
One by one, the names of those who had made the cut were announced. First, Shannon, then Kesse, Elyse and Giselle, to whom Tyra said, "Giselle, if you don't think you're fierce, then I won't." Next, Adrianne felt the wave of relief, followed by a tense Robin. The two remaining girls, Ebony and Nicole, were then called forward. Only one of them would continue on. The gift of one more shot at the title was then bequeathed to a relieved Ebony.
Nicole nodded slightly, acknowledging that her road in the competition had come to an end. Giselle's jaw dropped in shock as the beautiful Nicole turned around to say goodbye to her friends. "I don't have any regrets at all. There's definitely a relief that I'm going home, and it's a small one, and that would probably be just to be with my boyfriend. I guess I'm not going to be their next Top Model."
