My Front Wheel

The original front wheel got mauled in a crash so I retired it and built a new one from a Sun rim (Cyclo-Pedia) and a MaxiCar heavy-duty touring hub I found in a clearance box. That high-flange hub looks pretty cool with the small rim and the wheel is quite bomb-proof.

The front fork has been drilled and fitted with a special sleeve for mounting a Blackburn "Custom" front lowrider rack. This lets me carry a pair of small panniers on tours but I have to be careful or they can scrape the ground in sharp turns since they sit so low.

The front brake has its own page.

The headlight is a Union Halogen unit that I've had for years. It gives an excellent beam pattern and illuminates the road very well with only a 2.5W bulb. It's fed from a battery that sits inside the hollow frame right under the seat and the switch to turn it on/off is a moped-type unit on the handlebars.
