Gaits

The Walk is a four time marching pace.
The Trot is a two time pace in which the horse moves on alternate diagonals.
The Canter is a three time pace: left hind, right hind, and left fore leg together, follwed by the right fore.
The Gallop is a four time pace; an extention of the canter, with a smoother gait.

Some Horse & Pony Breeds

Appaloosas are popular ranch and pleasure horses, ridden western style in shows.
Camargue Horses are used to heard cattle.
Cleveland Bays are used in driving competitons. They do well in show jumping and horse trails.
Dutch Warmbloods are excellent performers in dressage, show jumping, horse trails, driving, and breeding "sport horses."
Friesians are popular all round working horse; particularly successful in driving teams.
Hackney Horses are mainly carriage horses.
Irish Drafts are an ideal hunters, especially for the bigger rider.
Mustangs are protected by law. At one time they were used for meat.
Pintos are used for general riding; often ridden western style.
Quarter Horses are all purpose riding horses; used especially for western riding contest.
Selle Français' are well suited to all competive sports.
Thoroughbreds are primarily used for racing.
Welsh Cobs are popular for breeding, showing, competitive and practical driving and riding.
