Ketchikan Outdoor Recreation and Trails Coalition

2006 Activities:

We sponsored several hikes and kayak/boat trips again in 2006.

Saturday, June 10 - Dude Mountain Trail - This hike was fairly challenging with the considerable late snow this year. Our event co-sponsor Parks and Recreation kindly offered the use of several pair of snowshoes. This photo (by Harold) shows (L-R:) Susan, Dave, Jessica with Maya on her back, Maureen, Kerry, and Elizabeth taking a short break. Click on the picture for a printable version. We enjoyed the views from the top on a beautiful sunny day before heading back down.

Saturday, June 24---Ice House Cove kayak and hike---The report (and picture) from Harold: It was a dark and stormy day, but the kayakers decided to meet at Mountain Point to make a final decision. It was going to be a go for MJ, Dave, and Harold. After an exhilarating crossing to Ice House Cove, we stashed our kayaks and hit the trail for Snag Lake. It was only a light drizzle all day so conditions did not interfere. On our journey through the woods and across the muskeg we found many interesting small plants, many of which MJ could identify. At the lake we settled down for a leisurely lunch, enjoying the tranquil scenery. This is a lake I would like to explore in a portable boat. Heading back we were running parallel with with the rollers, which increased as we neared Mountain Pt. A decision was made to make a 90 deg right turn and head for a different beach. We put in tired, but with no mishaps, and rated it a very rewarding trip.

Saturday, July 1---Village Island boat and beachcombing trip---This was a great trip! We had a beautiful sunny day and calm water. Village Island was the site of a Tlingit village at one time, many of the totems at the Totem Heritage Center were originally from Viilage Island. We saw a few decaying totems (we think) and parts of clan houses (we think). The young people had a great time playing on the beach, and the adults had a great time relaxing. The photo (by Jim) shows Steve, Sheila, Anna, Katrina, Danny, Dave, Sara, Roy, and Luke.

Saturday, July 22---Betton/Tatoosh Island kayak/boat trip---The weather wasn't the greatest, this trip wound up being just Webmaster Dave in his kayak. This photo shows me enjoying a tofu snack on Pup Island. The water was a little rough on the west side of Betton Island, but it didn't rain, and the sun came out as I explored the east side of Betton. Maybe next year we'll do it again, and have better weather.

Sunday, July 23 (rescheduled from July 8)---Harriet Hunt Lake kayak/canoe trip---Harriet Hunt is a beautiful lake bordered by muskegs, yellow pond lilies, and summer flowers. We circumnavigate a small island at the far end. Call one of the coordinators to sign up for this day trip: MJ Cadle, 225-7050 or MJ Turek, 225-2592.

Saturday, July 29---Lunch Creek to Emery Tobin Lake and back!---We had a great day for this hike, which was co-sponsored by the Ketchikan Ladies Trails Coalition (KLTA). About a dozen hikers made their way along the creek, enjoying the scenic views along the way. Two hikers made it all the way to the lake. Photo by Dave.

Saturday, August 12---Deer Mountain Trail---This was the 7th consecutive year we've co-sponsored this hike with Parks & Recreation. Once again, the forecast of rain might have kept some people away. Six of us enjoyed this hike despite some occasional light rain. This photo (by Dave) shows (L-R:) Ellen, Jens, Bob, Nancy, and Elizabeth enjoying the view of the low clouds and fog at the one-mile "lookout."

Saturday, August 19---Vallenar Point cabin--- The report from Harold: My friend Suneel from India, and I met Mike and Susan at Knudson Cove. There we loaded into their boat for a brisk ride across the narrows to their comfortable cabin on Gravina Island. There they showed us around their spread with its veggie gardens, berries, and out buildings. We checked out Mikes shop and Susan's kitchen and library. We also wandered through the forest cloaking Vallenar Pt. and the beautiful views toward POW and the Cleveland Peninsula. In the afternoon Suneel and I took out their kayaks and explored the Vallenar Rocks. A great trip and we thank Mike and Susan for their warm hospitality. (Photo by Harold)
