Rollingstone - Transister
Fronted by a English vocalist Keely Hawkes and backed
by a Scotsman Gary Clark (guitar) and California native Eric Pressly
(bass); Transister's musical style is as eclectic as its lineup.
The group mixes horns, cellos, industrial drum loops and Indian
flutes into their guitar rock foundation.
Clark and Pressly met in a bar in Los Angeles while Clark was vacationing
in the States. Pressly flew to Europe a couple of weeks later and
met up again with Clark in his London-based studio. They began to
collaborate on the future sounds of Transister. Clark knew of a
talented vocalist who worked in a pub on Fulham Road, and he soon
recruited Hawkes to help them record their first album. With six
weeks left on Pressly's visa, the trio recorded six new tracks,
all of which were included in their debut album. Transister was
released on the band's own label, Trans Records, and distributed
by Interscope Records in 1997.
