April 2004

9 April    3:50pm

Quite busy, it's been. Right now my dad's taking a nap and resting his sore ankle and I'm watching a snooker match on Eurosport. One of the three English speaking channels on tv here. So to start off today's entry, let's talk about yesterday.
We started off the afternoon walking through Le Jardin du Luxemburg. I twas a nice stroll, very pretty scenery. We then made our way to the Pantheon. Lucky me, I was able to use my ISIC from last year to get a dstudent discount. (same with the Cluny). It was quite beautiful inside. We went down to the crypt and saw the spots where Voltaire, Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas were buried. Afterwards I took my father to Le Musee National du Moyen Age, or Le Cluny. The Cluny was originally a Roman Bath from the 3rd Century AD. A 15th Century mansion was built on top of the ruin and now it's a museum. Inside there were many tapestries and artifacts from the Middle Age. Overall it was pretty nice, nothing too extraodrinary. I think the biggest collection (of importance) is the tapestries of the Lady and the Unicorn, that we saw.
Afterwards, we headed back for a short rest and then grabbed some dinner at a pizza and pasta place. Then headed back to the hotel. I warned my father to not fall asleeptoo quickly, so to be able to sleep through the night, but alas, he was asleep by 9pm. I watched the snooker finals that were on tv. I'm rooting for the 25 year old (Paul Hunter) from Leeds. And afterwards, watched Chocolat in French. But back to my father not heeding my advice, at about 11:30pm, I heard my father get up and go to the bathroom, where he proceeded to take a shower. I found this odd, but went back to sleep. At midnight, I woke up again. My father was in his clothes and was getting his shoes on. I asked him,
"What are you doing?!?"
"I'm getting ready."
"What time do you think it is?!?!"
"7:00."
I double checked the clock next to me. "No...dad, it's only 12am."
"What?"
"Dad, it's 12, not 7. Go back to bed."
And asleep I went back to. I awoke again at 2:30 because my father had reawoken. He wanted to know the time, to which I suggested that he held onto my clock. It took me a while to fall back asleep, but when I did, I was sound asleep for the rest of the night.
In the morning, we grabbed some delicious breakfast downstairs before making our way to the Eiffel Tower. It took us an hour to walk over, but it was a nice walk so I didn't mind the time. We were able to pass by many small stores and shops. We waited in line for tickets for about an hour (not as bad as the 2 hour wait the guide book suggested). It was fun going all the way up to the top, but my God!!! it was chilly. The wind was freezing and I was wearing my new green pants to which I found out to my dismay, were paper thin. When we reached the top I was only able to snatch a couple pictures before my camera battery died. And to frustrate things, my mother had given me the wrong adapter. Bloody hell, I say to that. We then made our way over to Bateaux Parisian where we had a voucher for a boat ride up and down the Seine. For some odd reason though, it wasn't valid because there was no billing address on the voucher, so they didn't accept it. Bastards ;) So we grabbed some lunch at their cafe. AFter that we made our hourlong trek back to the hotel. We stopped by a store, similiar to a Best Buy, and found a super sweet adapter. The store only sold one kind, a swiss world adapter, that works in 150 countries. It's pretty sweet, but tres cher! Very expensive. But I hope it's well worth the investment. So good news is, I can charge up my camera. And now I'm resting in what my dad is constantly saying, the most comfortable bed he's ever slept in. It's been hilarious ho wmany times he's made a comment about the bed. Ha! Dinner tonight, I'm going to suggest hitting the Mexican restaurant. I hope I have interesting stories to tell tomorrow.
Cheers!
