TRAVIS CUT..."ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER DRUMMER"...THEM'S GOOD I bet they end up changing their name! This is a compilation of singles recorded for various independent labels, singles destined for markets in Germany, Japan, America and Australia, and of course, Britain. Among the 21 tracks are a couple of covers. "Stranglehold" gets a fair kicking, while "In A Rut" has frantic drumming, and an atmospheric section, but I still prefer the Ruts' original as it was more menacing. Good try, though.

The songs are fast and furious, with superb drumming that is accurate as well as driving. Travis Cut seem to go through drummers at an alarming rate, hence the album title. There's three drummers contributing, including one called Walton North III ! As there is a 'drummer required' ad under the disc, they are probably still looking for the next in line.

Travis Cut have two 'proper' albums under their belt, and going by the singles presented here, they should be worth checking out. As an introduction to Travis Cut, "Another Day, Another Drummer is a damn fine advert. Punky, poppy, melodic with traces of hardcore, and blistering riffs at breakneck speed. "Look I'm Wrong" must have had guitarist Chris dunking his hands in cold water afterwards! Seriously, there are some damn catchy tunes here, and I bet they go down a storm on the European punk circuit. Hopefully they'll be touring up here soon. Meanwhile, this compilation is a pretty good introduction. www.bidean.demon.co.uk

Travis Cut - "Complicated" (Fluffy Bunny) The fact that the members of Travis Cut will quite possibly be stacking shelves at Kwiksave this coming Monday doesn’t make the two abrasive speed-punk anthems that the band rattle through in a suitably shambolic fashion here any less enjoyable. The singer is suffocated by the fuzzsaw gtr.s that drown out both bass and drums - leaving your ears - and feet - a tad worse for wear. Like, hey. Fun. Headchecks/Travis Cut split 7" (Speedowax)
This is on quite nice see-through yellow vinyl - piss coloured? The first Headchecks song is really good and I mean really good. The other ones aren't quite as good but are still decent pop punky type numbers. Travis Cut provide a version of Too Much Kissing and covers of Imperfect Tense (I think the Senseless Things did it originally) and In A Rut (do I even need to tell you who originally did this. Hint: it was the Ruts). Can Travis Cut do no wrong? Probably limited to 2 and a half or something stupid like that but if you're quick you might be able to get yourself a copy

Travis Cut/Marshes split 7" (Speedowax)
Just get this for the Travis Cut songs. They are quite possibly two of the best that they've ever done. I'm not sure of the names because I didn't get the cover with this due to the fact that Rich had run out of them!! It was the last copy left too. The Marshes, however, are crap. It sounds like one of those really crappy Nirvana copy bands. One of them used to be in Dag Nasty which probably explains why they got signed! The Travis Cut songs still make this worth getting if you can find it. I think it's impossible for them to write bad songs.

Caeser Soze/Travis Cut - No Prudence split CDs (Fuxony, 142 Springfield Road, Brighton, BN1 6BZ)
This is a turn up for the books - a Travis Cut single that isn't a 7"! For that matter it's not even on Speedowax. What's happening! It's their first new songs in a while I think. They are pop punk but aren't generic Epi-Fat type stuff. Instead it's quite similar to the Undertones I reckon. One of the best pop punk bands in the UK I think. Caeser Soze aren't quite my thing though. Their ska-punk type stuff and that kind of thing never really does much for me I'm afraid. They put in loads of energy though. Definitely worth taking a chance on.

Travis Cut - Seventh Inning Stretch (Suspect Device) I'd only heard their Peel session before this and liked that a lot and I like this LP too. It's kind of a more modern sounding '77 style pop punk like the Undertones or Buzzcocks. Dave Smalley, who produced it, also put in some extra guitar solos which add a bit to some of the songs. It's only £5ppd so send of it for it from Suspect Device, PO Box 295, Southampton, SO17 1LW. You might as well bung in an extra quid for Suspect Device fanzine because that's great too. http://www.oocities.org/SunsetStrip/Plaza/9051/Jan99rev/Jan99rev.html

Travis Cut 7" No Good With Words (Cargo) This is three song seven inch is kinda bland. Same old sound. Made from three guys from England, or around there. A-side= No Good With Words, (sounds like the singer has his pants on too tight, or he is 14) Old Times Sake, (Simple riffs, with simple everything else to go a long) B-side= Save me now (Save me now, please.) It is a garage band sound of sorts, it flows good, but I think that the sound is a bit backoffish. Sometimes the singer will sound kinda hard, but other times not hard at all. I am in-between on this record. Try it to support Cargo... or don’t. -Nick http://www.10things.com/10things/reviews/19rex.htm

Japanese Review with Skimmer

Travis Cut, Dugong, Southport, Blocko - Upstairs at the Garage - 30th July 2001 Rude To Stare Collective........After that incredible show, TRAVIS CUT knew they would have to do something different to prove themselves. So, they shocked the audience by playing 2 and a half hours of meandering, brooding post-rock with chunky, metallic beatdowns and tearful, emo buildups. No, i'm lying. They played pop-punk. Still, as much as everyone may be "burned out" on good ol' pop-punk, you have to admit TRAVIS CUT still do it pretty well. Their two minute songs are packed with the kind of dual harmonies & choruses you can never get out of your head. Case in point: about halfway through their set i thought to myself "i wonder if they'll play that "i hope you're doing badly/i hope you miss me madly" song", a song which i could still remember the chorus of from the last time i saw them which was like last year - that's a pretty damn catchy chorus if it stayed with me all that time! I think they said that song was the opening track on their new album: it's a great song so hunt it down. They closed (i think?) with a cover of " Too Much Kissing" by SENSELESS THINGS (agh i just typed sensefield by mistake - how much of a gimp am i) and left us to walk out after a great night of good ol' UK Punk Rock. The only bad thing about the whole night was that by the time i left i was so soaked with sweat that it was FREEZING. Ahh well.

Travis Cut, the 'Tone, Southport, - Southampton Joiners - 20th March 99 'The Collective' On-Line zine Southport are up next, which is great by my book. I saw them support the Lovemen over in nearby Winchester, and was reasonably impressed that night. Either (a) they were much better tonight or (b) some of the songs had stuck because tonight I though they were great. Nice melodic hardcore, with hints of Snuff maybe and a drummer who possess the most intense stare in the history of punk rock. They suffered from guitar problems half way through which sort of derailed the set - but definitely a band to keep a very close eye on. They even dedicated the set to the drummers cat (RIP).
Shouts of "the Clash are on stage" reach my ears while standing in the flooded Joiners toilets. As someone pointed out - you might as well just piss straight on the floor because its gonna end up there anyway. Anyway - "the Clash" are, of course, actually the 'Tone, and this time I around knew the songs and get to do some funny dancing. Along with a sizeable group of like-minded individuals who also appreciate the ska guitars and great harmonies. Tonight the 'Tone win the 'Best Quotes' and 'Funniest Band' awards for the banter in between songs. I guess when your drum kit falls apart you have to do something to keep people entertained. And keep people entertained they surely did...
And finally to Travis Cut. They are on late, not surprisingly, which is a real shame for the band because most people seem to have fucked off home. They still rattle of a great set with a nice mix of new tunes and songs from their excellent '7th Inning Stretch' album. The highlights tonight include 'Asmuchas' and 'Complicated' but what's up with the bass player? Does he always look this pissed off? More dancing around and boo hoo to the Joiners for trying to charge us a quid for a bottle of water. The kebab shop next door proved a more cheaper option for some refreshment - and some straight edge harassment :) Cool.
