New Dorm: A Possibility for Blackburn's Future

With a new student total of 257, enrollment is on the rise at Blackburn. Therefore, the staff has been in the process of designing a proposal for a new dorm to be built on campus.
Two of the essential contributors have been Director of Residence Life Dennis Blanchard and Vice President of Finance Bill Fanning.
Collegiate Facilities is the company being seriously considered to build the structure. This company has built similar facilities at colleges including Illinois College and MacMurray College in Illinois.

Jones Hall Undergoes Small Upgrades

CARLINVILLE, IL - Hundreds of students arrived Aug. 19 and 20, 2005 at Blackburn College’s campus to begin another year. Many of these students were the female residents of Jones Hall, which houses approximately 80 women. Upon arrival, Jones Hall residents were surprised to find many small upgrades. These small, but nice changes consisted of mini-blinds, a television, and microwaves. There were mini-blinds installed in every room.
Jones Hall resident director Reid Noud stated “In the college’s effort to better the standard of living in the residence halls, and to make the residents feel more at home, the department of residence life felt that a nice improvement would be to install mini-blinds in all of the rooms.

Survey Comparison May Aid Accreditation at Blackburn in 2010

The form “accreditation” is unfamiliar to many college students, but is vitally important to the credibility of a college. If students don’t care about the meaning of accreditation, they should. If a college or university is not accredited, its students will probably not be able to participate in either Federal or State financial assistance programs.

Blackburn Implements EAST Program

Many new students expect the transition from high school to college to be a smooth process of self-discovery and achievement; and unfortunately that is not always the case.
“Historically it is accurate to say that forty percent of students will drop out after their freshman year,” says Rob Weis, Blackburn College campus counselor. With a drop out percentage at nearly half, many believe intervention is a must if we hope to retain students.

Lumpkin Library Sees New Changes

The start of the new school year saw changes all over campus; Lumpkin Library was no exception. A new checkout system for Lumpkin Library was put into place on May 23, 2005 to replace the former system, Smart Term. The new system, Millennium, is now a part of all 160 libraries in the Lewis and Clark Library System.
The system is easier for the desk workers and patrons to use.

Changing it Up

This year there was a brand new, New Student Orientation. In past years, the new incomers went through a three day series of activities and events throughout the orientation at the beginning of the year. However, not too much excitement or talk came about after the end of the program in the past years. The coordinator of the New Student Orientation, Andrew Bond, had a few things to say.
