INSULIN SHOT - TRACK SESSION

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. Just in the U.S more then 20million people has diabetes.

Vinnie was diagnosed with diabetes Type 1 in March 2000, he did a blood exam as routine pratice, as triathlon was getting serious that year and as any high profiled athlete, he was checking if everything was fine before start the racing season again.

The blood sugar test result came 226mg/dl, he was diagnosed before any major problems as usually happens, "By the time I was starting to train serious, so I was on a strict diet and training program, I was drinking too much water but thought would be due to all the sessions I was doing in summertime, and I lost 5kg, and became very happy with that, thought I had lost all that of body fat, this process took around 6 weeks, so I got the blood exam results, I think I could last another week without any major problems but training was starting to loose quality, I was about to tell my coach I was having an overtraining problem."said vinnie who just didnīt want the diabetes to hold him back or stop him to race at high levels, he started then to take insulin shots and got back into training again.

Vinnieīs current diabetes managment method is based on Insulin Flexible Terapy, he takes 50% of of the total insulin intake in the morning using slow acting insulin and takes shots of Ultra Fast Insulin before meals. He also checks his blood glucose before/during/after training to make sure he is performing at his best.
