Fun Educational Activities!

Need a fun activity that emphasizes Reduce, Reuse or Recycle ideas?

Following are easy to prepare activities that you can do in your classroom to learn how our daily activities can effect our environment.

Scavanger Hunt. For K-6 students.
Students compare and contrast man-made versus natural materials by going on a scavenger hunt. Have students look for the following objects: students can either keep a list of what they find or bring back examples of the items. Remind students not to pick up potential dangerous objects such as broken glass or ragged metal cans. Also, if students are bringing back items, they should only bring back discards from people or nature.

• a natural food covering
• a man-made food covering
• a man-made object that comes from plants
• a man-made object that comes from minerals or rocks
• something that is decomposing
• something that could be recycled
• something that could be eaten

• something that could be eaten
• something that helps plants grow
• something a worm might like to eat
• something that would mold
• a man-made object that pollutes
• something that could hurt an animal
Litter Walk. For K-6 students.

Take a litter walk. Don't forget your litter bag. When you get back to the classroom, classify and make a graph of the litter. Color in one space for each kind of litter that you find. Discuss the following items:

Where does each of the kinds of litter come from?
Could any of the litter be recycled?
Why do you think people threw it on the ground?
What could be done to make it easier for people to recycle or dispose of it correctly?

Students can also be given a map of the area and then told to mark on the map where they find different types of litter. The students can discuss the areas that attract the most litter.
