Sailing News

2000 has been an outstanding year in sailing for TS Armidale. From State Sailing Titles at Easter to Bridge to Bridge in November, we have gone from strength to strength.
Although our unit is more than 2 hours from the coast and the nearest decent sailing is a dam 35km to Armidale's north (subject to blue green algae), we have a fixed sailing team in two boats who have performed exceptionally in all conditions, and have brought home proof.

State Sailing Titles

In the Easter School Holidays, TS Armidale attended the State Sailing Titles at Tanilba Bay, north of Newcastle.
After adjusting to the strong wind conditions and cold temperature, our boat 927 - 'Sheean', came away with overall 2nd place in the cadet division, while our second boat 926 - 'Teddy', finished just behind with overall 3rd place in the cadet division.

Queen's Lake Sailing

On the June long weekend, a slightly depleted sailing team headed off to Queen's Lake for a short series of races.
Despite incessant rain and unpredictable winds, the crew of 926 managed to perform well, with 2nd in the cadet division. This was a big coming of age moment for our new coxain of 926, LS Patton. He and his crew of SMN Adams and SMN Ferguson just missed out on first place by 30 seconds.

Bridge to Bridge/Bridge to Breakers

On the 18th and 19th of November, TS Armidale took part in the annual Bridge to Bridge sailing weekend on the Clarence River near Grafton.
On the 18th, a smaller race called the 'Bridge to Breakers' was held, and in this TS Armidale took both 1st (927) and 2nd (926) places in the cadet division (trophies at right). The 19th wasn't an ideal racing day, with not much wind the entire day. Although the race was stopped at the maximum time, no cadet division boats finished. At the time of the stoppage, TS Armidale was coming 1st (926), 2nd (927) and 3rd (363). Although not part of the fixed racing team, 363 and her crew came to Grafton to give more TS Armidale cadets racing experience.

National Sailing Titles

For 8 days over the New Year, TS Armidale competed in the 20th Cadet Corsair Class National Championships held on Lake Maquarie at Point Wolstoncroft.
After adapting to the conditions in the invitation race held on the 27th, 927 showed their true colours by coming 3rd in the first heat.
A fantastic performance from TS Armidale in the second heat saw us walk away with both 2nd (926) and 3rd (927) places.
In the 4th heat, 927 again took 3rd place.
The last few heats took place in very strong winds and our crews struggled in the unfamiliar conditions.
Although holding overall 3rd place for much of the competition, 927 was just pipped and finished the competition with overall 5th place. They were the 2nd highest NSW boat.
Medals were handed out for 1st 2nd and 3rd places in each heat, so our crews didn't walk away empty handed for all their work.
927's medals are pictured at left.
