Houston, Texas ¾ Texas Southern, trying to bounce back from their loss to Grambling State in the Alamo City Classic, suffered their second defeat of the season with a 24-13 non-conference loss to the Morris Brown Wolverines.

The Wolverines, 3-6, sealed the victory on a 38-yard interception return by Lemuel Mullins, late in the fourth quarter.

Tiger quarterback, Adam Lamb, out with a bruised tailbone suffered against Grambling, had to watch as backup Julius Davis was pounded by the Wolverine defense. Davis was sacked four times during the contest, and picked off two passes."Anytime you play under these circumstances, not having your starting quarterback, that can impact you," said head coach, Bill Thomas.

Davis connected with wide receiver, Cortez Hankton, for a 42-yard touchdown pass to put the Tigers up 10-0 with 10:02 in the second quarter. Hankton finished the game with six catches for 132 yards and one touchdown.

With 4:07 left in the first half, quarterback Kewan Dewberry hit Laquonne Holden for a 44-yard touchdown to get the Wolverines within three at halftime with a score of 10-7.

Morris Brown opened the second half with a 34-yard field goal by Michael Bryson. He also punted eight times for 368 yards, netting a 46-yard average.

TSU kicker, J.B. LaCombe got the Tigers going at the top of the fourth quarter with his own 34 yarder. LaCombe was 2 for 4, missing from 34 and 39 yards out twice in the second quarter.

Midway through the fourth, James Thornton slipped through the Tiger defense for a 67-yard rushing touchdown, to give Morris Brown the lead for the first time, 17-13.

Moments later, Mullins stepped up and intercepted Davis on the Tigers’ 38-yard line, with 1:17 left to go, leaving the Tigers no time to recover.

"Morris Brown wanted it more than we did," said Thomas, "I’m not sure if we had a relaxed attitude, but it was not the attitude it takes to win a ballgame. And, when you don’t have your starting guy out there, everybody has to step it up another level and we didn’t do that."

The Tigers (7-2) seemed to be going against more than just the Wolverine defense. Some questionable calls by game officials raised eyebrows from the visitor’s side of the field.

Nevertheless, for the fourth time in as many years, the Tigers have fallen short east of the Mississippi, posting losses to Morgan State, Tennessee State, Howard University and Morris Brown.

Defensively, the Tigers sacked Wolverine quarterbacks, Dewberry and Stanley Hardy, six times. Defensive end, Tommy Balom, garnered two sacks for a loss of 19 yards. Lernard Mack led with seven tackles, two for a 14-yard loss, one breakup and a 10-yard sack.

For Morris Brown, Cory Williams led the defense with 11 tackles, two for a loss of 12 yards and one sack for eight yards.

Texas Southern takes on the Southern University Jaguars in a conference matchup, November 11,at 6:30 p.m., in Baton Rouge.
