Finland, what it is? (everything that you didn't want to know about Finland) Although many of webizens know where and what kind of country Finland is. I can straighten up some facts and common mistakes. This is geologically the 5th largest country in the Europe, but population is just about five million. Capital city is Helsinki (aborginals will call it just with the word "Stadi"), and it locates at the south-coast. Helsinki's population is about a half million people. You can look at the different views from Helsinki with the on-line realtime Helsinki-camera. I live in east-end of the Helsinki, because there is cheapest rental houses.. Years average temperature is +6 degrees of Celsius. Our independence started at 1917. Now we have woman as a president; Tarja Halonen. Finland is democratic republic in between of the Russia and Sweden. Our best neighbour is Norway, at the northern border. We have nothing to do with communists, especially after they tried to steal our independence and lands in the 1940's (for example) with not much success. We kicked their ass with population of just 5 million people. That is the thing called patriotism. Most of the finns are patriotic, but only because we won the Russians. We should not be proud of our government. Taxes are high, especially to people what have small- or midsized incomes. Or what would you like about the prices of cars in the Finland: fourteen year old Toyota Corolla GT (AE86) costs still about 7-8000 US$. Or new Celica what costs 42000 US$ with the 140 hp engine. No Celicas with stronger 180 hp engine available. Gasoline is about 1.3 US$/ liter. Government uses about one percent for car-owners from the incomes of the traffic-taxes. Nobody has ever written a song or a poem from finnish roads.. Average finns (man, women afford less) wages are about 30000 US$. Etc. If you want to move here, and you like cars -don't. Go somewhere else. Also alcoholic drinks (such as beer, what is finns favourite drink) and cigarettes are overtaxed. Therefore many finns go to do a shopping to Estonia, which is about 60 kilometers to south from Helsinki. From Helsinki to Estonia and back goes many ships every day. If somebody is anyway curious enough to come here, it is wise to do the trip in the Summer. In the winter there is cold, and there is nothing activities else but drinking, skiing or swimming in the ice-cold water (and have a sauna over that, of course. (Thank you god for Playstation) By the way, sauna is not swedish invention, and neither is Santa Claus, Mika Myllylä or Xylitol. They all are finnish inventions, but swedish don't get it. They think the opposite. As you can see, everybody wants to steal something from us. Maybe most of finns are therefore silent, cynical, suicidal and drunks. Allright, that was the self-pity and bitterness. There is some good things in Finland. In the summer, there is midnight sun, many lakes (187 888 in-land lakes, to be precise) to sink or to swim. There is pure nature, lot of forests and countryside. There is also a Jyväskylän suurajot (Neste Rally Finland) every year. Polar bears are not walking on citystreets here since there is no polar bears, just reindeers and elks (i have seen elks walking in the city, but it is not usual). Reindeers doesn't live here in the southern Finland, those unintelligent animals can be found at the Rovaniemi and from north of it. Yes, and we do have couple of good car-drivers such as Mika Häkkinen, Mika Salo, Tommi Mäkinen, Juha Kankkunen, Marcus Grönholm, Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola, Henri Toivonen (Rest in peace), Markku Alen, Timo Mäkinen, Pentti Airikkala, Topi Serjala, Kari Mäenpää, Risto Virtanen, Jouko Puhakka, Timo Salonen, Sebastian Lindholm, Harri Rovanperä, Toni Gardemeister, Pasi Hagström, Jouni Ahvenlammi and so on.. I just wonder why. We have one good business company here too, a Nokia, although most of it's stocks are sold to foreigners already.. If you want know something from finland, just feel free to mail and ask me. |
