Collaborative
Learning and Peer Practice
Why wait
for a native to help you learn everything? Native speakers are wonderful
teachers of pronunciation and expressions, but they can't always be available
for practice. It doesn't matter if you speak perfect Spanish, English,
Japanese, etc., in order to practice language. One on the most available,
untapped resources available to us is our fellow language student.
You might
be in the same class. You might have the same test scores. You might even
have the same vocabulary. So what is wrong with practicing together?
If you
don't have the same ability, the same vocabulary or the same test scores,
then this is also a great opportunity to tap into each others' knowledge
and experiences.
Language
communication is about familiarity, comfort and intention. If your intention
is to communicate, you will no matter what level of language you have.
If you wish to become familiar with certain common phrases and expressions,
then you might find it necessary to find a native source. In either case,
if you want to become comfortable speaking a foreign language, you must
practice. In order to practice, you don't need to speak only with native
speakers.
In collaborative
learning and peer practice sessions, it helps to have directed materials
to focus on which encourage you to practice with your peers. Your peers,
more than most native speakers, will understand the particular problems
you are having with certain words and phrases because they share the same
experience. Chances are, they might be able to help you find a way to learn
and use basic grammar structure or common phrases you keep having difficulty
remembering.
Just letting
go and allowing yourself to make mistakes, and to laugh at them, helps
improve one's self-esteem and confidence with language communication.
It doesn't
matter if the members of your group have similar or different interests.
If they are similar, then you will probably find you have a common vocabulary
which makes for easier comprehension. But if you have different interests,
you have the added bonus of being able to expand your knowledge and your
vocabulary.
