Private
Lessons
One of
the most rewarding and truly beneficial ways of language teaching and learning
is the one-on-one classroom.
As a student
of Language, I have found that I am best motivated to learn
when I combine the study of specific guidelines with practical application,
which means I look at grammar and structure, but also get a chance to use
the language in everyday, applicable situations.
While
it is very beneficial to learn some grammar points and vocabulary in a
rote manner (by memory and repetition), it is also necessary to offer the
opportunity for the student to begin opening up to the language through
real life experiences. In this way, language becomes more than just another
question of simple memorization. I am never more excited when learning
a new language than when I get that very important "click" that moment
of realization when specific grammar and vocabulary terms start making
sense and I am hit with that emphatic "ahh, now I see!" (Hon to da!!) feeling.
As a professional
teacher, I know that teaching itself is not about making a student reliant
on your services forever. Private language training has several specific
goals: to get started, to refine skills and to practice. It is pacific-Trades
belief , whether teaching yoga, English or Spanish, that it is the institution's
responsibility to not only provide quality teachers and materials, but
to also motivate the student to acty and think for themselves which is
achieved through tailoring classes to each students needs. Within a reasonable
amount of time, students should feel comfortable enough to step out on
their own and practice what they have learned. If the school is performing
correctly, eventually the student will no be reliant on the institution,
except prehaps on a much more advanced, and specialized level.
In Japan,
there are a lot of private schools that offer private lessons, charging
large fees in order to pay the overhead of hiring teachers, administrators
and other costs. Many people are willing to pay this fee because it saves
them the hassle of having to find a teacher. But for some, the cost is
far too high.
Besides
price, one of the downsides of a language institute or even a small private
school run by second-hand parties is that the classes are often excessively
micro-managed. These schools sometimes offer a very aesthetic setting,
providing a professional, business-like atmosphere, but tend to remove
some of the key components to language acquisition and open communication:
enjoyment, spontaneity and a real-life setting. This is not to say that
there are not some very meanigful and beneficial Eikaiwa insitutes.
However,
as a private language teacher and student, I know the benefits of working
in direct contact with each other. Such contact only serves to facilitate
both language learning and teaching. In addition, it is far easier to be
flexible and adjust schedules when there is a direct teacher-student relation.
