The name, "Nana's Angels" refers to my Nana, Emily Elsie Guthrie Barnett Daniel, and the "angels" are the children this project is for, as well as the people contributing to it.
After Nana's death in 1996, I wondered what I could do to honor her memory and repay her for the love she showed everyone and the example she had set while alive. Struggling with depression for over 25 years, and with a husband and children, time and energy is at a premium, but I realized I could put to use the gift Nana had given me years ago when she taught me to crochet. It could be picked up and put down and done as I was able. Making the children the recipients was a logical choice as they are so special to me, as they were to her. |
Deciding to make hats was also a logical choice, since the need is there after the children's hair is lost. Wanting to make them unique, however, I came up with the idea to put a "huggie" - a small squeezable toy - with each one, hoping it would provide a comfort and stress reliever for the kids. I also designed some special hats that had the huggies on them - and could be detached and reattached to wear as wanted. (Visit the picture page to see these and other hats).
Realizing that I may not be of much benefit, however, at my slow pace, it was sometimes discouraging, but I kept at it, putting a little of Nana and my love in with each one.
Then, the miracle of the Internet! A recently acquired computer and connection to the net in July, 1997, brought me to a great chat room, WBS's Needlecraft Chatroom, where I met some wonderfully nice people. Some of them discovered what I was doing and volunteered to help! A personal home page created at WBS sparked more interest, which then prompted this site, and Nana's Angels began to grow.
The hats and huggies are now being sewn, knit, and crocheted, and purchased baseball caps embellished, in each person's unique creative style, by our group from all over the world. The children have benefited by being able to not only have more, but also have access to a bigger variety.
It has been such a blessing to be involved with the wonderful, caring people I've had the privilege of meeting, and I never cease to be amazed and humbled by the offerings of help for this project and the children.
