He's a Black Man

picture a Man
a Black Man
can you see someone?
if so
what Race is He?
is He deep brown
or soft beige?
charcoal Black
or a lighter shade?
does he have a wide nose and thick lips
or a light mustache and narrow hips?
is His hair kinky, curly, or straight?
He's a Black Man
but is it written on His face?

is He educated and articulate
or would you call Him ignorant?
does He claim His Race
or try to pass?
can you look in His face
and see Slavery?s past?
is He Black-folk or Negro
African-American or High-Yellow
is He ruled by money, love, or fate?
He's a Black Man
but is that His only Race?

Comments On He's A Black Man

I'm actually not a fan of the gratuitous infliction of one's own amateur poetry on other people, but I wanted to tell you that I really thought your poem was good. I hope this is an indication of the kind of stuff that's going to be put up there...I've seen too much stuff rhyming "love" with "dove" and "cry" with "die" to not be a cruel cynic...especially of my own stuff. But who knows? Maybe I'll be inspired by you and others' writing, and post something one of these days. Keep it up. ~Maria

Present Tense

take a picture of your past
in 3-d then look at it
with your eyes open
erase the parts that have
no meaning
change the end to the beginning
then look at it with your eyes closed
blinded by the truth of living
illusions become real
happening as the flash clicks
and takes the picture
of your present
forgetting time is always
moving
right now just passed into
the realm of memory
so put away your picture
taker maker
look at what is happening
now
because once the moment passes
it ends
time is continuous and
misleading
conquering your picture of present-tense
which doesn't actually
exist in a world that's always bending
changing taking pictures with
no meaning
