Snoufferia History
In the beginning, the planet was without shape.  The Great Lord saw a void in the universe and decided to fill it.  He brought  Snoufferia into being with but a whisper from his lips.  The planet was there, but it was barren so the Great Lord filled it with trees and streams, oceans and mountains, hills and glaciers.  With a world created he smiled and was glad, but now it needed inhabitants.  The Great Lord created the birds of the air and the fishes of the sea.  He formed the beasts of the land and the creatures of the underground.
And then, as his final creation, he formed one race from each of the four elements.  From the earth he created the Under-Dwellers.  From the air, the lithe and graceful Elves.  From the water, the playful and unpredictable Halflings.  And from fire, the versitile Humans.
With his creations loose on the world, the Lord guided them and counseled them in their times of need.  All was well.  Peace reigned and all of his creations lived in harmony.  The Lord was pleased with the way things were progressing but he realized that the harmony was a result of his being the only influence.  He decided to change the rules.  He would create two opposing influences, one good and one evil.  Those who followed the good influence would be rewarded in their after-life.  Those who followed the evil influence would be punished.
The Great Lord formed two entities, Benegoro the Good and Malagoth the Evil.  Each was formed and molded by its actions.  Benegoro became a being of white light, clothed in robes of shimmering silver while Malagoth became a horned, spiny, fire-sheathed demon.
Through the first few hundred years of the planet's existance, the Lord watched his creations.  The Under-Dwellers had a civil war, splitting into two rival factions.  Each side begged the guardians to let them triumph over the other.  The guardians bickered over the fate of the two factions and ultimately turned to the Lord for his council.  Realizing that the guardians needed an impartial negotiator for these types of decisions, the Lord created a third entity.  He named it Ekaf and made it the mediator and justicar of the world.  Ekaf's first decision was to start the Under-dwellers over, from the beginning.  One faction he made into Dwarves and the other Faction he made into Gnomes.  All of their memories were erased and they were released back into their underground homes.  This would be known as the Great Divide and would start the planet's calender at A.D. 1.
In A.D. 2439, the denizins of the world once again raised their voices in a plea to their gods.  The inhabitants of Snoufferia united in protest against the Humans... well most of them.  The Elves protested because the Humans were cutting down their forests for homes for their rapidly increasing population.  They also were secretly jealous of the Humans ability to adapt to almost any situation.  The Dwarves protested because the humans were mining their hills and mountains.  They also were secretly jealous of the humans ability to get along with almost anybody, being a race that was perpetually grumpy.  The Gnomes protested because the humans sought their precious gems, though they were really just scared of the Dwarves. The Halflings protested because they thought it would be interesting to see what happened, though they really didn't wish any ill will toward the Humans.
The Guardians, through much argument and battle, came to a decision.  They would not kill the humans, though neither would they let them run free.  The Guardians imprisoned the humans on islands around the worlds.  They put in place safeguards so that the humans could not leave, but nor could the outside world get in.  Ekaf also put in place a prophesy that one day one human would escape.  That human would be given one chance to release the humans from their prison but only if he or she could get a large group of races to work together to help him or her.  This start of the imprisonment is dated as I.I. 1.
