Question:What is the UNIA?
Answer: The UNIA is the intelligence service of the United Nations Organisation. The UN Intelligence Agency's primary mission is to collect, evaluate, and disseminate terrorist intelligence to assist the UN Secretary General, the UN Security Council and its Counter-Terrorism-Committe in making decisions relating to international peace and security.

Q: Why was the UNIA established?
A: The UNIA was founded to co-operate with and co-ordinate operations of national secret services. The UN Intelligence Agency supports the overall effort by the UN and its member states to combat international terrorism by collecting, analyzing, and disseminating intelligence on terrorist groups and individuals. The UNIA also works with intelligence services and other organisations of peaceloving nations and shares pertinent information with them.

Q: What is its task?
A: To fight terrorism and help maintain international peace and security. An international threat demands an international answer. The UN and the community of states found it necessary to break new ground and close ranks in the fight against terrorism.

Q: What to do if I come to know about a terrorist attack?
A: Call your national authorities. Usually your national law enforcement or intelligence agencies will be the first contact. They will deliver information to appropriate institutions.

Q: Does UNIA spy on other intelligence services?
A: No, we work hand in hand with other services to maintain international security.

Q: Was the UNIA involved in Mission X or Y ?
A: We regret that we can not publish any details about our operations. However, we plan to publish a yearbook providing an insight in the Agency's work. Please be patient. Our first year in office will not allow such a relase but hope to publish in 2003/2004.

Q: Has the UNIA armed forces?
A: No, the UNIA is not charged for military interventions. We can only give advice to the Secretary General and the Security Council of the UN. We have no mandate to use military force.

Q: Is UNIA something like an “international police”?
A: No, the UNIA has no law enforcement powers either. It can not arrest or interrogate suspects. The UN Intelligence Agency may engage in covert action in accordance with applicable law or on request of the hosting member state.

Q: Where can I find the UNIA?
A: Offices exist in several member states of the UN, though its headquarter is in Vienna/Austria. Only there we run a public office. We would kindly ask you not to send any messages to our offices but to the headquarter.

Q: How many people work for UNIA and what is its budget?
We are sorry, but due to our security regulations these questions can not be answered. The Agency's budget is part of Secretary General's and is legally externaly supported by members of the Security Council.

Q: Can I work for UNIA?
A: Yes, but vacancies are rare. Have a look at our employment-page.
