AGRICULTURE AND RELATED SECTORS

Most of the Upper Dir district is mountainous terrain. Agricultural land is available only on the hill slopes and in the valleys as such mechanized agriculture is hardly done except in those areas which are easily accessibly for transportation of agricultural machinery. Farming is usually carried out with crude implements plough drawn by bullocks, which is the traditional method of plough. The irrigation system is also not favourable, mostly agriculture depends upon rain falls. Wheat, maize, rice are the major crops of the district. Fruits and vegetable of various kinds are also grown in the district. Poppy cultivation is very common in the district in the valleys of Nehag, Usherai, Tormang, Sultan Khel Karo, and Kair etc which is the most profitable crop but due to the use of opium in preparation of heroin, the government has banned poppy cultivation in the district. Dir District Development Project has been introduced to encourage the farmers in eve of developmental schemes etc to cultivate alternative crops.

HORTICULTURE

The fruits grown in the district are walnut, apple, peas, plum, apricot, fig, loquat, mulberry and persimmon.

LIVESTOCK

Total livestock population in the is 452,801 in which 122,640 are sheep and 330,161 goats. Government has established veterinary hospitals and dispensaries nearly in every corner of the district. There are some mobile dispensaries too, which are moving according to the migration of nomads. They are treating the livestock and vaccinating the animals against contagious diseases.
Besides, the livestock department, a semi government organization has started extension work in the district for improving the knowledge of the livestock breeds to improve the qualities of the livestock in the district.

IRRIGATION

Like all other mountainous areas, irrigation mainly depend on rain or on the streams (Nullahs) falling from top of the hills into the river Panjkora. These Nullahs are also non-perennial. The irrigation department and local government are working for the provision/utilization of water resources of the district for the irrigation purpose. The main irrigation schemes are as under:-
1- Irrigation scheme Gandigar.
2- Irrigation scheme Darora.

FORESTRY

The hills top are mostly covered with natural forests. There are numerous men-grown private nurseries of all kinds developed with the cooperation of Forest Department. The Forest Development Corporation is playing important role in the development of forests in the district. Pine trees, Poplar, eucalyptus, oak, wild olive, etc are the most common forms of forestry in the district. Forestation by the Forest Department is on 282,636 acres.
