Monument Valley

Introduction Empty Vital information Empty Phil's log

Monument Valley is an area of free standing sandstone rock forms that rise majestically from the desert floor. Up to 1,000 feet tall, they create a truly magical desert landscape. The beauty of the area is a fact well documented by the numerous Western movies and television commercials for which Monument Valley has served as a backdrop.

The movies filmed here include Billy the Kid (1941), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Easy Rider (1969), Back to the Future Part III (1990) and many more.

The first thing you notice upon arrival at the visitor center is the numerous private tour operator businesses located in the car parking area. Here you can book anything from 2 hour 4x4 tours to full day horseback riding experiences.

The 2 hour tour gives you a good overview of the valley. These tours also take you to park sections which are only open to guided tours. There are even shorter tours available, but they only follow the public road which is open to all passenger cars.

The self guided car tour takes you to some of the most photographed sites in the area - maybe even in the USA. The road is rather rough, so tourists please don't forget that most rental car companies won't allow you to drive your vehicle on unsealed roads - so you have to either join a guided tour or break the rules and drive really really carefully.

Sunset is best be watched from the platform outside the visitor center. You will see two of the most famous items of Monument Valley - the Mittens - turn slowly into dark red colors as the sun sets behind you and the shadows get longer.
