The mission of the National Atomic Museum is to serve as America's museum resource for nuclear history and science. The Museum presents exhibits and quality educational programs that convey the diversity of individuals and events that shape the historical and technical context of the nuclear age.

Directions The National Atomic Museum is located on Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, approximately six miles from the airport, on Wyoming Boulevard.

Since the museum is part of Kirtland Air Force Base, you need to obtain a permit to drive to the museum at the check point on Wyoming Boulevard. This takes about 10 minutes, sufficient identification (drivers licence etc) is required.

Phil's visit to the National Atomic Museum

Date Tuesday, September 12, 2000
Arrival 8:00 am
Departure 10:00 am
Time spent 2:00 Hrs

The exhibit features, of course, a lot of hardware associated with nuclear warfare, including replicas of atomic bombs. A lot of information is provided about the only A - bombs ever used in war, Little Boy (August 6,1945, Hiroshima) and Fat Man (August 9, 1945, Nagasaki). Of course, you won't find anything about the state of the art weapons currently used by the U S armed forces. After all, this is a museum and therefore devoted to displaying things from the past rather than reveiling confidential up-to-date facts.

The outdoor exhibit contains some missiles which were designed to carry nuclear warheads. A Titan II lies on the ground, its stages are seperated. This provides detailed views at some details of the missile.

Among the other missiles, a Minute Man, which is considerably smaller than a Titan II, is on display. Finally, some airplanes wich were able to carry atomic bombs are also part of the exhibit.
