Autism is a developmental disability that usually appears during the first three years of life. This mysterious neurological disorder interferes with social interaction, verbal(language) and non-verbal communications, leisure and play skills.
I have one son (age 5) with autism and another son (age 3) with a speech delay.
Prior to becoming a consultant this past summer, I had been buying books for my young
children from my new supervisor, Sharon Riegel.
The first two books I purchased were The Mouse About the House and A Squirrels Tale. For a child with autism, sitting down and attending to a book is usually a very difficult task. However, with these clever and interactive books, my child was intrigued and still is. I'm still amazed that after several years, I haven't lost the mouse or the squirrel!!! When I meet a parent and show them the slot books, it's almost a guarantee they buy at least one!
Once I started selling the books on my own, I couldn't believe how many were rich in language and I could use them for my home program (tutoring).
To name a few:
Children with autism especially love books that have the alphabet or numbers for their predictability.
This makes the following good choices:
Most of these children tend to have strong visual skills, so finding the Cartwright duck
in his books is fun and keeps the children focused on reading the book.
Others that I usually suggest to fellow parents, speech pathologists, and teachers include:
I have found that introducing and selling Usborne books to my friends and fellow parents with an autistic child has been very rewarding. Most of us spend up to 40 hours a week educating our children at home in therapy and we are always looking for exciting ways to teach language. So many of the books that we carry in our catalog make learning and teaching our special children FUN
Thank you for visiting my site. I hope it has helped you discover books that can help you and your students.
I will be revising this information as I receive more input. I will post on my Therapist page that changes have been
made so you will always be up to date. Thank you once again, and please e-mail me if you have any further questions.
