So you want to know about Usborne books?

Let me see if I can answer the comon questions:


Usborne books were started in Britain by Peter Usborne, a writer of school information books and an accomplished news magazine for adults. He was informed by his wife in the late sixties that they were with child. He was very excited and wanted to start a library for their child immediately, his only problem was he couldn t find any books available to the public that would be informative as well as draw the attention of a young child, plus finding easy readers were almost impossible. Having searched near and far he decided to start his own company, and create his own line of books. After much deliberation, and consulting with educational experts he came up with his criteria of EDIBILITY.

And here it is for you in the nutshell:

  • High picture to text ratio- realizing that pictures draw attention and interest no matter the age Peter decided we need books to catch and hold attention, create questions and interest.

  • Information placed immediately around the pictures they pertain to- now that we have the attention of the reader we must satisfy their curiosity immediately in bite sized easy to understand pieces, so the reader will consider the book an easy read and non-threatening.

  • Affordable- Almost all of our books are available in paperback and library bound, giving you a choice of durability and price. Also when a book is sent to the printers the first time it receives the pictures only, this way they can print millions at a time to reduce costs. When orders come in, for the 60+ different languages to be printed on the pages, they are able to only print what is needed in each language, thus reducing waste. All this comes together to bring you a high quality book at the lowest prices available.

    We are run here in the US by an accountant with a heart of gold (Randall) and our division by a real powerhouse (Kathy Slemp, who seems to be nuclear-powered) who turned EDC Publishing from a tiny, mediocre company few people had ever heard of to one that was a stock pick by Motley Fool last year and named one of the Top 100 Small Businesses in the country by Fortune Magazine this year. And most of our stock is owned by a mix of consultants and employees, people unlikely to sell out.

    And ultimately, Usborne Publishing (in England) is headed by a guy (Peter Usborne) with degrees in both literature and business management (the latter from University of Paris) who has won awards his entire working life for his innovations in children's publishing, and publishing in general.
