The Numeracy Strategy
Literacy and Numeracy are the most importantaspects of primary education. From September 1999 all primary pupils will focus on numeracy for 45 to 60 minutes each day - the Numeracy hour. The Numeracy Hour is divided into 3 parts:
5 - 10 mins : Oral work and Mental Maths - children work together in a whole class group
30-35 mins : The Main Teaching Activity - children will cover all areas of numeracy during this session, including numbers, calculations, shapes and measures and problem solving .
10-15 mins : The Review - The whole class will take about what they have done.
During the hour children will learn about the following:
Numbers - coutiing and understanding the value of numbers, decimals and fractions
Calculations - understand addition and subtraction, working on times tables and division
Solving Problems - working out 'real life' problems and finding out why numeracy is important in every day life
Measures, Shape and Space - understanding all about different shapes, and units of measurement eg miles and kilometers
Handling Data - how to collect and present numbers
The Key Objectives.
The new framework sets out a term by term teaching programme, detailing what each class will be expected to cover in each week of each tearm of each year. There are sections for laying the foundations for algebra, on links with other subjects, on using information and communication technology and on homework.
