In the chill air of a crisp November evening, the
University of San Diego Toreros hosted cross-town
rival San Diego State University. The engagement,
began as the Aztecs, rocked the Toreros back on to
their heels opening up with 4 unanswered goals. The
Toreros could not seem to stay with a myriad of Aztecs
cutters. It wasn't until Matt Thrill house Van Houtten
opened up San Diego State to start a slow come back.
The first and second quarter found the Torero's lack
of practice evident, as miscues and miscommunication
led to a sluggish first 30 minutes. Unable to stay
on the official's good side the Torero's found themselves
down for 9 minutes in penalties giving up 4 goals
MDD. Half-time found the inspiration of the All-Maryland
Defense with Ariano, Vanderwagen, and Hayes. The AMD
shutdown the Aztec attack and even help sustain the
Torero D through a rough 2 minutes man down, with
30 seconds of it 2 men down. Perhaps the hardest most
brutal hit ever leveled on the Canyon field, places
the Toreros in this predicament. Jeff Bloom Transfer
from UC Riverside, released from a penalty took a
50 yard sprint from the box to a beautifully executed,
man- ball, when he took MAN. There is a large indentation
on the Canyon field where the Aztec was introduced
to mother turf. Despite the 3rd quarter leveling effect,
the Toreros could not gain the real advantage. We
moved with in two with a score in the last minute
but with our backs to the wall and getting desperate
with take-a-ways we gave up an extra goal. Final score
11-8.
This was a pre-season event and thus the Toreros approach
this as a learning experience. Coach Borton, had nothing
but praise for a hard effort by his team. Noting a
few standout performance. Goalie Chris Robinson, Sophomore,
Goalie, was able to shake off the first few scores
to deliver a very impressive game. Steve Merrell,
Freshman, Long Pole Midfielder, again showed why he
was the highest touted player to ever come out of
Utah. As every ground ball was magically attracted
his stick. The midfield found A.J. Laing, Sophmore,
begin to cement his role as the lead midfielder. Scoring
and defending, A.J. was doing it all.
The Torero's next face the Alumni on the 9th of November.
The Torero's hope that the team that showed up tonight
in the second half shows up for the whole game on
Saturday.
Tonight's Awardees were as follows.
Skull Award-Jeff Bloom
Atackman of the Game- T. Ladt
Middi of the game- A.J. Laing
Defensman of the game- Ryan Ariano
Ground Ball award -Steve Merrell
