The Courage project was started initially in response to the need for longer deep space exploration, after the Delta Quadrant was able to be explored. However, after encounters with The Borg, and other enemy races, Starfleet decided that they needed a more powerful class of ship.
Designs were made, and plans drawn up, for the largest Starship Starfleet had made to date. They started by designing and building the basic frame. Given the nature of the project, it was built in secret at the Jupiter Construction Yard, a secret base in Jupiter, the Gas Giant in the Sol solar system.
The frame of the massive starship was took a year to build, given the intricate detail. It was also delayed as mid way through the building phase, the designers wanted to be able to add in a small craft, a Defiant class that had been upgraded massively.
When the frame was built, Starfleet began to fit it with as many weapons systems as they could without turning it into little more than a gunboat. They also included many brand new defence systems, such as the AEGIS defence system, as well as the brand new Gauss Cannon.
Starfleet Science made their mark on the ship as well, by including the all new, state of the art, science labs, with everything to make the labs top of the line, similar to what they used at Starfleet science. It was the first time such a thing had been done.
It was also decided to include decks for Marine personnel, as marines were often used on the front lines, so they were given their own decks, as were Starfleet Intelligence Officers.
Over many years, Starfleet had been working on new power systems, as well as new shielding systems, to improve the defences of the ship.
The newest addition came four months before the new ship was completed. Scientists in Starfleet had been working on a new torpedo and beam weapon, the Plasma Beam and Plasma torpedo. Using superheated, compressed plasma, they found a way to turn it into a powerful weapon which was tested against an alien species called The Kiklar, who tried to attack Starfleet. The Plasma weaponry worked perfectly, and thus was certified for use right away.
Other systems installed include an Astrometrics lab, Hyperspace sensors and communications, and many other upgrades. They also include Phasers, photon and quantum torpedoes, since they have been a tradition of Starfleet for many years.
When the ship was ready for launch, she was given to Rear Admiral Zaa to Command, and named the USS Courage NCC 74588-C, the first of her line. More are planned, pending results of the new ship.
