Character History: |
During the Cardassian occupation of Bajor there were several half Bajoran, Half Cardassian's born, usually to a Cardassian master and a Bajoran slave. Lasiria was one such child. Lasiria never knew her father, for once he discovered that her mother was laden with child, he cast her off. Lasiria's mother gave birth to Lasiria in the terrible conditions of a Cardassian mine where her mother was to work and eventually die beaten to death by a Cardassian solider when Lasiria was five years old.
Without a mother in brutal conditions, Lasiria's life would have been a living hell, rejected by true Bajoran's and beaten around for fun by Cardassian guards. Yet an aging Bajoran Vedek by the name of Carael took pity on the young girl and sheltered her within his temple from both other Bajoran's and the Cardassian's. Over time, Lasiria began to see Carael as an adoptive father and Carael saw Lasiria to be the daughter he never had.
When the occupation ended, Vedek Carael took a post on the old Terok Nor space station, now run by the Federation and renamed Deep Space Nine. He worked within the Bajoran temple found on the station and took Lasiria with him. There, he continued to shelter her, despite the end of the occupation. Though the other Bajoran's of the temple knew Lasiria and understood that the heritage did not make the girl, Carael feared that other Bajoran's would not view her in the same light. Instead, he privately schooled her and in her spare time she performed minor errands in silence around the temple.
During the war between the Federation and the Dominion, Vedek Carael befriended a Starfleet Captain by the name of Richard Rees, CO of the USS Ocean at the time. Not only did the Vedek and the Captain's friendship blossom, but Richard and Lasiria also spent much time together. Understanding the sheltered life that Lasiria had led and the reasons why, Richard would spend hours telling Lasiria of his adventures onboard the various ships he had served. Mean while, Lasiria began to look up to Richard, seeing him as a role model for the way things should be.
It was around then that Lasiria set her mind to joining Starfleet so she could be out amongst the stars like her friend Richard. She studied hard so she make the grades required. Vedek Carael realised that he was not getting any younger and that he would not be able to shelter Lasiria forever and so decided not discourage it. In his mind, there were far worse ways Lasiria could experience the universe than belonging to Starfleet and Starfleet seemed to be a pretty open organisation in regards to race.
Lasiria made the grades to pass into Starfleet Academy in 2379. However, instead of shipping off to Earth to be tutored into Starfleet there, she was instead picked up by the USS Vanquish and taken to start her training at the new Academy wing in the Gamma Quadrant onboard the Space Station Juno. However, upon arrival, politics forced the Academy at Juno to close down and since the first ship heading back to Earth was the USS Vanquish, she ended up back onboard the Vanquish once again. Starfleet Academy agreed for Lasiria to start her training onboard ship at Captain Richard Rees request otherwise she would have been behind in her studies by the time the Vanquish reached Earth. The oppertunity has also allowed Lasiria to learn about her desired position in Operations while onboard ship (while Richard keeps a careful eye to make sure she adjusts well to meeting new people and life in Starfleet).
