Growing Seasons for Little Characters
by Rebecca Bertolini
Great book for moms with older and younger home schoolers, ...OR those who teach Sunday school. * There are 240 character building activities for children 3 to 7 or so. Designed to help shape your little ones into boys and girls who follow Christ. * Activity plans organized by season, month, and week. For each activity: materials needed (most are inexpensive, found in every house); what the lessons include (physical activity, art/crafts, story, premath, etc.); step-by-step easy to follow directions; 40 activity sheets to reproduce on a copier; AND no activity takes more than 10 minutes to prepare! Many activities make use of Bible stories and lessons. Available from Conservative Book Club (#3868) for $10.49, elsewhere for $12.99. Her 1st book entitled Mom's Big Activity Book for Building Little Characters for preschoolers is also a great resource.

ATTENTION SPANS
Many parents wonder how long their child should spend working at one time. Here are some guidelines recommended by the Hewitt Research Foundation, Child Development Center:
                Ages 6-8        10-15 min
                Ages 9-11       15-20 min
                Ages 12-13      20-25 min
                Ages 14+        30-40 min
If your child in not able to stay focused for this amount of time, work your way up slowly. Start with a level they can handle. Special hands-on activities as well as practical living skills (making cookies, sewing, gardening, cleaning the garage, etc.) may extend for longer periods. Remember that boys are typically behind girls by 1 yr. and have a more difficult time sitting still. Give exercise breaks between subjects to release tension...jumping jacks for kids and mom work great! When you, or the kids, just can't seem to concentrate or patience is running thin, go outside. Even if it's for 5 minutes on the patio! Fresh air really does wonders! It restores the carbon dioxide/oxygen mixtures you are breathing in, especially when the house is all closed up in the winter!

  TIPS
KITCHEN TIPS
When cooking pasta, add one tablespoon of cooking oil to the water. This will prevent the noodles from sticking and starch build-up. To extend your flour products longer, put into freezer bags to keep in pantry or put in refrigerator. For no mess flour coating of meat and chicken, use your empty bread bags!

HEART TO HEART
Are you struggling with home schooling? Do you feel frustrated and defeated? Well, praise the Lord! You must be doing something right. Whenever you raise your standard in living for God, Satan will be actively attempting to discourage you. But good news! God is bigger and stronger and most importantly, if Christ is dwelling in you, you have the power to overcome any circumstances that Satan brings your way. (Phil 4:13 & Rev 12:11) Over the last five years of homeschooling, my husband and I have experienced a transformation of our lives. Homeschooling is not just school at home! It has changed our entire life and focused it back towards the Lord! It has caused us to firmly trust in His Word and in His power. We have learned how principles from God's Word, applied in our lives, really work! I firmly believe the Bible to be the only source book necessary for success. Our first year we struggled (literally shut down) with rebellion in our children and God showed us where we needed to change. He sent people to us to disciple us in biblical "child training". What a blessing that has been! It is never too late to start disciplining your child - even a teen! One of the biggest problems that parents face - especially when getting a child home from the school system is the rebellion. In order to get your child back under your authority you will have to do 2 things. One is to pray constantly for and with that child. The other is to gain back that child's heart and turn him or her back to you. Each newsletter I am going to discuss how this is accomplished and share with you all some things that happened when I pulled my three oldest out of the public and private school systems. Until next time...chin up! and praise the Lord!

"Ideas for teaching science, or 100 ways to get excited about bugs?"

A  Don't use science textbooks like you would a math book. Pick     chapters that correspond to your kids interests. Then supplement it with experiments, field trips, and visits to the library.
Do unit studies on topics the kids like. Don't try to cover 20 science areas in a year! Do only 3 or 4 areas and really pull them apart and have fun.
A  Try using 'Science and the Creation Week' or something like it where all science studies are focused into God's creation of our world. This will tie together science with Scripture and help kids really marvel at the
wonderful way God made everything.

New Question ? IS: "How to Spruce Up Winter Blahs While Waiting for Spring?" Have any suggestions? What do you do? Or maybe you have a question? Send them on in to me to be added!!!

SCIENCE CURRICULUM REVIEW
Are you looking for a good Science curriculum that would cover multi-grade levels being taught all with one book? Science and the Creation Week by Noble Publishing is an excellent choice! It covers grades 2-6 and is spiral bound. Cost is $20. There are seven units correlating to the biblical days of creation. There are 3 levels in each lesson: explorer, inspector, and researcher. Each expands on difficulty level and thinking skills.

Another multi-grade science book is Considering God's Creation by Eagle's Wings Educational Materials and costs $29.95. This covers a little higher grade levels 3-7. The book is 3-hole punched and perforated. It has lessons, hands on activities, notebook activities, Scripture verses for each area of study. A fun extra called Evolution Stumpers, provides scientific tidbits to challenge the theory of evolution.
