Wish Drama Album

Track 2: 1st Wish: Prologue
Translation by Tara (usyaginopeiji)
Translator comments: This track is pretty much a direct retelling of the first chapter of the Wish manga, but with a few lines cut or changed here and there. Nothing new, but I guess itfs cool to experience familiar scenes in a new way.

[Indicates a characterfs thoughts]

*Indicates exposition and character action*

-Indicates a change of setting-

1st Wish: Prologue

-Residential area at night-

*Shuuichirou is walking. The sound of the wind rustling the trees can be heard. He stops for a smoke.*

Shuuichirou: [Itfs quiet.]

*While walking, he sees a clock.*

Shuuichirou: [2am huh? I guess no one else is walking the streets this late at night.]

*Shuuichirou continues walking and hears the sound of someone sobbing somewhere on the empty streets.*

Kohakufs voice (1) : Waaaah.... waaaaahaaaahhh!

*Sounds of crying and tree leaves ruffling.*

Shuuichirou: Is someone crying....?

*He looks around but still doesnft see anyone on the streets. As he continues walking the voice gets louder and louder.*

Kohakufs voice: Uuuuwaaaa..... waaah waaaaahh!

*Shuuichirou befins to walk faster.*

Shuuichirou: [A child?]

*Shuuichirou follows the sound of the voice. His footsteps stop abruptly at the spot where he hears it the loudest. Searching for the voicefs owner, he sees something that looks like a white-winged child(2) hanging in a tree. The child looks down at him.*

Kohaku: Ah......

*Shuuichirou looks back up at the child.h

Shuuichirou: [What on Earth... is this? A child? No... its head is way too huge. More importantly, how and why would a child get itself stuck in a tree like this? And what are those things on its back? Wings?]

*Kohaku wipes his tears while Shuuichirou is busy with his questions and answers*

Kohaku: Um... Good evening.

*He bows politely while hanging from the tree.*

Shuuichirou: [It talked. If it can do that, I guess it isnft a doll. Come to think of it, a doll wouldnft be able to cry like that either.]

*As Shuuichirou keeps thinking, a crow swoops down from the night sky with amazing speed. It attacks, incessantly pecking at the mysterious child.*

Kohaku: No! No!

*The crow continues the deadly assault and Shuuichirou takes off his necktie. He uses it to smack at the branch, freeing the child from the tree.*

Kohaku: Ayayayayayaya!!

*Kohaku becomes unsteady and begins to fall but is cought by Shuuichirou. The crow has second thoughts about the attack and returns to the sky. The child looks pleased.

Kohaku: That was really dangerous. Thank you so much for saving me!

*He happily bows his head at Shuuichirou, who looks like he canft believe his eyes. He still quite comprehend what hefs seeing.*

Shuuichirou: I still donft get it. Itfs warm, it speaks, it must be a living thing... and those flapping things on its back are what? I guess they really are wings?

*The child flies around, making a cute flappy flappy sound with his wings. He addresses Shuuichirou*

Kohaku: Um... What is your name?

Shuuichirou: Kudou Shuuichirou

Kohaku: So itfs Shuuichirou-san?

*The child giggles happily.*

Kohaku: I am called Kohaku.

*Even with the introduction, Shuuichirou doesnft know how to react. Kohaku does not seem to mind.*

Kohaku: I canft fly very fast at night, and I become unable to assume my true form. Thank you so much for saving me from danger!

Shuuichirou: ...............................

Kohaku: Um... I would like to express my gratitude....

*Shuuichirou again notices the flapping things that appear to be wings on Kohakufs back. He grabs one of them and gives it a hard tug.*

Kohaku: Kyaan!!

*Kohkau rubs at his back and looks up pitifully at Shuuichirou.*

Kohaku: It hurts if you pull on my wings!

Shuuichirou: If that hurt, they must really be attached to you.

Kohaku: Theyfre my wings, so of course they are attached to me. Oh, I guess people from Earth donft usually have wings, do they?

Shuuichirou: ............................

*In his head, Shuuichirou replaces gdonft usuallyh with gneverh.*

Kohaku: But I have them. I am an angel after all...

Shuuichirou: ...what did you say?

Kohaku: An angel.

Shuuichirou: Who is?

Kohaku: Me, of course!

*Kohaku giggles and points to himself. Shuuichirou takes one look at that smile and walks briskly away.*

Kohaku: Ahhhh! Please donft leave!

*Kohaku uses his tiny wings to flutter after Shuuichirou with all his might.*

Kohaku: Please allow me to repay you!

*Shuuichiroufs footsteps slow down.*

Shuuichirou: I must be so tired from doing the surgery that I started sleepwalking. I had better hurry home and get to bed.

Kohaku: Are you a doctor?

Shuuichirou: Yeah. I did an 8 hour surgery today. I knew I was too tired to drive home, but I never thought I would fall asleep as I was walking...

Kohaku: Ifm sure you did a fine job on the surgery, but you are completely awake right now.

*As Kohaku speaks these words, Shuuichirou stops walking.*

Shuuichirou: So youfre saying this is not a dream?

Kohaku: Yes!

*Kohaku smiles.*

Kohaku: I am so grateful that you saved me from danger. Please allow me to pay you back somehow.

Shuuichirou: By gdangerh you mean being stuck in that tree?

Kohaku: Yes. That crow is a demonfs minion.

Shuuichirou: What did you say?

Kohaku: A demonfs minion.

Shuuichirou: And youfre an angel?

Kohaku: Yes!

*Shuuichirou walks away again.*

Kohaku: Aaaaah! Please donft be so shocked!

*He chases Shuuichirou desperately, shortly becoming out of breath.*

Kohaku: I...I would like to return your kindness.

Shuuichirou: Ifm dreaming right now, so you donft have to do anything.

Kohaku: This is not a dream!

*Shuuichiroufs footsteps stop as he reaches his house.*

-The gate at Shuuichiroufs house-

*Kohaku looks up at the Japanese-style fencing and gateway.*

Kohaku: Is this your house?

Shuuichirou: Yeah.

Kohaku: May I repay you before you go inside?

*Shuuichirou opens the gate. Inside is a Japanese style garden with lots of trees and flowers. When he sees this, Kohaku cries out happily.*

Kohaku: Wooooaaaaahh!!

*The two of them go inside.*

Kohaku: There are so many trees!

*While gleefully flying around and admiring the trees, Kohaku barely notices Shuuichirou closing the gate. He eventually hears it shut.*

Kohaku: Ifm stuck now...

*He remembers why he is there.*

Kohaku, Oh right, the favor!

Shuuichirou: Ifm tired.

*Shuuichirou goes inside the house and gets his futon out of the closet.*

Kohaku: Um, okay then. Shall I wait until you wake up? We can talk again tomorrow morning.

Shuuichirou: Do whatever you want.

*As Shuuichirou turns his back to go inside, Kohaku calls out to him.*

Kohaku: Is it alright if I stay in your garden?

Shuuichirou: Go wherever you want. The garden, a room, whatever...

*As he changes out of his suit, Shuuichirou finishes the statement in his head.*

Shuuichirou: [...because this is only a dream.]

*Shuuichirou puts on a sleeping kimono.*

Shuuichirou: [But itfs such a weird dream. Itfs very strange for me to dream about angels, especially a sweet little dumpling-faced(3) angel being attacked by a crow. I donft remember watching any weird TV lately, or reading any weird books either. Could it be that Ifm only dreaming that Ifm in my house? In reality, I could be sleeping in the middle of the road.]

*Shuuichirou looks toward the window. A light appears to be emanating from the trees.*

Shuuichirou: [Now the trees in the garden are glowing. Is it because that angel is there?]

*It seems as though Kohaku is having fun. Shuuichirou sighs.*

Shuuichirou: [Fine. This is definitely a dream.]

*He falls asleep to the sounds of Kohaku laughing and playing gleefully in the garden.*

-Shuuichiroufs house - morning-

*Beams of sunlight shine in through the sliding paper door to the garden. It sounds as though the birds are singing and playing with the person from the day before, whose laughter can also be heard.

Shuuichirou: Nn.....?

Shuuichirou gets up, opens the door, and looks outside. The angel from yesterday is sitting in a tree and playing with the birds.

Kohaku: Ah! Shuuichirou-san!

*He happily flies down from the tree.*

Shuuichirou: ....it wasnft... a dream?

*Shuuichirou canft believe what he is seeing. This impossible thing is floating right before his eyes. Kohaku approaches, still smiling.*

Kohaku: Good morning! The trees around your house are beautiful, and so friendly too!

Shuuichirou: Youfre... that angel from yesterday...?

Kohaku: Yes! Ifll introduce myself properly after I change.

*Kohaku's body begins to glow. The light wraps around him as he transforms. His body grows until it reaches the approximate size of someone about 15 or 16 years old.*

Kohaku: I am the angel, Kohaku.

*Shuuichirou watches the transformation with a blank look on his face. Kohaku simply smiles back.

Shuuichirou: Ifm still sleeping.

Kohaku: I believe you are very much awake.

Shuuichirou: I hate unrealistic things. If Ifm not sleeping, I shouldnft be seeing a human being who can grow and shrink their body like that. It just shouldnft be...

Kohaku: Ifm not a human, Ifm an angel.

*Kohaku is still smiling*

Shuuichirou: ........................

Kohaku: Oh! I must pay you back for helping me yesterday.

*Kohaku clasps his hands together.*

Kohaku: Please make one wish, and I shall do my best to grant it for you. Think carefully.

Shuuichirou: I get a wish?

Kohaku: Yes!

Shuuichirou: From an angel?

Kohaku: Yes!

*There is a short silence as Kohaku waits eagerly for Shuuichiroufs next words.*

Shuuichirou: ...no.

Kohaku: Hoe?(4)

*Kohaku is surprised. He did not expect such a strange answer.*

Shuuichirou: I donft have any problems, so I donft have a wish.

Kohaku: Eh? But...! I must repay you somehow!

Shuuichirou: I have a job and a house. Ifm not unhappy or angry. Also.... if I did have something to wish for, Ifd be able to get it on my own.

*Kohaku feels pressured.*

Kohaku: Youfre probably right...

*Hefs not going to give up*

Kohaku: B-but! Surely there is a wish that cannot be realized alone!

Shuuichirou: For example?

Kohaku: Um... um... um....

*He canft think of anything. Meanwhile, Shuuichirou goes back into his room, puts on some geta(5), and steps back out into the garden.*

Shuuichirou: I understand now that this is not a dream. Winged beings do exist after all.

*Kohaku follows Shuuichirou while hovering above the ground.*

Kohaku. Yes, angels do.

Shuuichirou: Yeah, angels. Anyway, I donft have a wish. Bye.

Kohaku: But there has got to be something I can do for you!

*Ignoring the desperate Kohaku, Shuuichirou makes his way over to the garden hose. He turns the hose on and begins watering the trees.*

Kohaku: Ah, um... What are you doing?

Shuuichirou: Watering the trees.

Kohaku: Ifll help you!

*Kohaku begins using his hougan(6).*

Kohaku: O spirits who dwell in water, hear my plea. Lend me your power, gather here so that I may water these trees and help them to live. Blessed rain, come down.

* As Kohaku finishes chanting, a torrent of water comes gushing from the water hose and squirts into the air. Water falls all around the garden, and it almost looks like itfs raining. Kohaku seems pleased with himself and looks back toward Shuuichirou.*

Kohaku: Is this okay?

*But Shuuichirou is soaking wet. He got hit by the water Kohaku summoned.*

Kohaku: Aaaaaaah! Shuuichirou-san, the water...!

-Shuuichiroufs room-

Kohaku: Please forgive me! Ifm so sorry!

*Kohaku looks as though hefs about to cry. Shuuichirou is drying himself off with a towel.*

Shuuichirou: At least the trees are watered now. Donft worry about it.

Kohaku: Ifm sorry... Ifll try harder next time.

Shuuichirou: I donft have a wish so...

Kohaku: Ifll wait until you can make one!

*He gets closer to Shuuichirou.*

Kohaku: If I return to Heaven without paying you back, I will be scolded by God! I promise I wonft impose, so please let me stay with you!

*Kohaku nearly breaks down in tears, but Shuuichirou doesnft understand why. Kohaku becomes small again.*

Kohaku: Since Ifm an angel, I do not need to eat. Plus, If I become small I wonft take up too much space. Ifll even water your garden for you!

*Kohaku stares patiently at Shuuichirou. Shuuichirou stares back.*

Shuuichirou: .....................

*Looks like therefs nothing he can do about this. Shuuichirou lets out a sigh.*

Shuuichirou: ...do as you like.

*Kohaku canft help but be delighted.*

Kohaku: Thank you so much!

Shuuichirou: But I still donft think Ifll be able to come up with a wish.

Kohaku: No, Ifm sure you will think of one. People canft live completely alone, so surely there must be a wish that you cannot grant by yourself.

*Kohaku uses his tiny wings to get closer to Shuuichirou.*

Kohaku: May I continue to call you gShuuichirou-sanh?

Shuuichirou: ...sure.

Kohaku: Please call me gKohakuh! Ifm very pleased to meet you!

*To be continued*

Translation notes

1. Since Kohakufs chibi and normal voices sound slightly different, the CD booklet distinguishes between the two by calling the small Kohaku gKohaku Mh. The M is for gMinisizeh. Same thing with Kouryuu later on. Yeah, I know itfs dumb. Thatfs why Ifm ignoring it. -_-;

2. Before Shuuichirou learns Kohakufs name, the text refers to him as gthe child(Kohaku)h. Where this occurs, I just use gthe childh.

3. I know this is weird, but Shuuichirou actually does say that Kohakufs face looks like a gmanjyuu,h Which is a squishy steamed bun/dumpling kind of thing. Theyfre pretty tasty, but thatfs beside the point.

4. Just so you know, ghoeh (pronounced hou-eh) is Kohakufs little nonsensical sound, similar to Kenshinfs goroh in Rurouni Kenshin. It doesnft really mean anything, itfs just an expression of confusion or surprise. CLAMP uses hoe again in Cardcaptor Sakura when it becomes Sakurafs trademark sound as well.

5. Geta are those Japanese-style wooden platform sandals.

6. The CD booklet defines hougan as "a magic-like ability". The original manga explains that this power is derived from nature and sunlight for angels and moonlight for demons.
