Rebels Play Well Against Sharks
by Richard Martorello
The Valenti Rebels participated in the San Jose Sharks and Hockey
WorkOut's co-sponsored Christmas 3-on-3 Tournament held over the
January 2, 1999 weekend at Hockey WorkOut in San Jose. The all-
women Rebels (yes, that was Roger between the pipes in
game #5 giving Wendy a needed rest) faced the challenge
of two all-men teams and a male dominated co-ed team.
Game 1 - Rebels vs Holocher (12:30pm)
The event started with the Rebels hosting the all-male team
Holocher. Holocher established a very quick pace for
the short 15-minute game by jumping out in front and claiming
a 5-0 victory over the Rebels. A heart-pounding, adrenaline-rushing
start felt good to get the new 1999 year off and running for
the Rebels' team.

Game 2 - Rebels at Tsunami
The Rebels' second game, against the male dominated co-ed team of
Tsumani, was filled with an offensive outburst. Mary Beth
started the game's scoring as the Rebels were moving right to left
up the ice. Later, Tsunami tied up the score only to fall behind
on a Lina goal. Mary Beth contributed another goal while
Lina's second goal of the period proved to be the game winner as
strong team defense and goaltending preserved the Rebels' 4-3 win.

Game 3 - Rebels vs Guiness
The Rebels' third game was up against the all-male power house team
known as Guiness. With the Rebels' down 0-3, Amber
broke into the scoring column to be the second Rebel to score in
multiple tournaments (scoring previously in Seattle). However,
Guiness was too big and strong to allow the Rebels to close the gap.
Guiness proceeded to control the flow of the game through sharp
passing and fast skating to win 6-1.

Game 4 - Rebels at Holocher
Game 4 provided a second chance to play against Holocher. The Rebels
felt confident going into this game yet whole sale line changes did
in the team as Holocher took advantage by jumping out to a quick 6-0
lead. A few moments later found the Rebels more settled down and playing
better hockey. Lorraine contributed well to the defense going
down the stretch (first tournament since coming off of the Injured
Reserves list) as Wendy's goaltending over the second half of
the period yielded only two goals making the scoring much closer than
it could have been considering the rocky start (Rebels 0, Holocher 8).

Game 5 - Rebels at Tsunami
Kristine, subbing for Lorraine in the fifth game of
the tournament, scored the first Rebels' goal in the second meeting
between Tsumani and the Rebels. Roger subbed in net to
give Wendy a rest to prepare for her next game (Rebels were
scheduled to play back to back in their games 5 and game 6).
Mary Beth later scored the game winning goal to give the
Rebels their second victory of the tournament and a 2-1 win.

Game 6 - Rebels vs Guiness
After playing five periods/games of intense preliminary round ice
hockey, was there enough in the tank for one more? Carol
thought there was as Leslie took the place of Kristine
and Wendy re-joined the Rebels back in net against Guiness.
The Guiness' men had other plans as their fresh legs outskated the
tired Rebels. A loud scream of pain could be heard throughout Hockey
WorkOut as Leslie blocked a slapshot off her ankle/shinpad. In the
end, an ego-driven male team tried to humiliate a tired women's
hockey team with a 11-0 defeat. However, our Lady Rebels took it
in stride with the attitude of "hey, they're just guys" and
were proud of how they had represented themselves throughout the
tournament.

Game 7 - Rebels at Holocher
The next game up was a playoff game between the second place
Holocher and the third place Rebels. The Rebels wanted to prove
they were better than the score of their last game indicated.
Kristine joined the lineup while Leslie placed
ice on her sore ankle. Wendy's strong play in net aided
the defense as the Rebels wanted to end the tournament on a
positive note. Holocher may have won the game 5-0 but the Rebels
were happy to get back on track by playing a solid game.

What Did We Learn?
To the credit of the Rebels, a proud team of hockey players were able
to walk away feeling good about themselves and what was accomplished
in the preliminary and playoff rounds. The Rebels recorded the most
victories (2) and goals (7) in their short tournament team
play history. Also, this tournament presented an opportunity to get
back in the competitive mindset from the holidays and to get ready for
the challenge of Las Vegas in February.
Watch out Las Vegas. The Rebels are coming!
