Game 1, February 4, 2000 - 2:20am

The Rebels returned to Las Vegas, Nevada for the 4th Annual Las Vegas Women's Hockey Classic and to improve upon their 0-3 record from the 1999 tournament event.

The Rebels jumped on the scoreboard first as Lina took the puck "coast to coast" and scored unassisted for a 1-0 Rebels' lead against the San Diego Heartbreakers 3. Both teams moved the puck up and down the ice but neither team could score until Elise scored the Rebels' second unassisted goal of the game in the period.

The second period saw no scoring by either team as the Rebels took a 2-0 lead into the third period while outshooting the Heartbreakers 11-3.

A little over one minute into the third period, the Rebels surrendered a goal to the Heartbreakers to reduce the lead to one goal. Then at the 8:56 mark, Carole fed a pass to Elise to set up Shann for the final goal of the contest.

When the horn sounded, the Rebels skated off the ice with a 3-1 victory and looked forward to a good night's rest before the next tournament game scheduled to be played within 10 hours.

Game 2, February 4, 2000 - 12:40pm

The Rebels second game of the Las Vegas tournament was delayed by more than a half hour as the Santa Fe Ice Arena's zamboni broke down while attempting to cut the ice for the 9:50am tournament game.

For the second time in as many games, the Rebels scored the first goal of the game. The first period was a scoreless affair between the Rebels and the University of Arizona Wildcat Icers. But in the second period, Lina guided the puck over to Tanya who redirected it to a waiting Karen for a goal.

The Rebels, outshooting the Wildcat Icers 16-9 going into the third period, attempted to extended their lead but the team from Arizona had other plans. In a span of two minutes, the Wildcat Icers scored two goals to take a 2-1 come from behind lead.

With less than a minute and a half in the game, Wendy skated out of the crease to the bench for Karen, the extra attacker. The Rebels skated the puck into the offensive zone and continued to apply pressure on the opposing goalie until the horn sounded.

The 2-1 win for the Wildcat Icers was a first ever team victory. The Rebels would like congratulate the Wildcat Icers in their first team win and for playing a great game.

Game 3, February 5, 2000 - 4:40pm

The Rebels played their first two games at the Santa Fe Ice Arena but the third game of the preliminary round was played at the Las Vegas Ice Gardens across town.

Wendy had plans of taking the Rebels into the playoffs with a shutout. After one period, both the Austin/L.A. Roadrunners and the Rebels were held scoreless by the opposing net minders.

The Roadrunners never knew what hit them in the second period as the Rebels turned on the scoring machine. Elise fed Shann the puck for a goal shot which trickled in off of the Roadrunners' goalie's catching glove for the Rebels' first goal of the period. Then, less than a minute later, Betsie sent a pass to Lorraine who in turn skating into the offensive zone. And for the second time in three games, Lorraine continued to skate toward the net unopposed and snapped a shot toward the net. This time, the puck hit the net instead of the post.

The Rebels' defense continued to shut the opposition. In the meantime, Shann and Elise picked up an assist on Angela's goal to give the Rebels a three goal lead. The final goal of the game occurred while the Rebels were making a three player line change. The Roadrunners left Shann alone while chasing the puck into the offensive zone. In a blink of an eye, Shann scored on the goaltender to the sounds of cheers on the Rebels' bench. Wendy's plan of a shutout and the team's effort to give her a 4-0 final propelled the Rebels into the semi-finals.

A complete team defense made it possible for the Rebels' to outshoot the opposition 55-35 and 8 of 9 periods. The three goals yielded was the lowest scoring output by opposing teams in a tournament played by the Rebels.

The Rebels' playoff opponent was the second seeded Columbus Capitals by the luck of the goals differential tie-breaker as both teams ended the three game preliminary round with identical 2-1-0 records.

Game 4, February 5, 2000 - 11:40pm

Unlike the previous games, the Rebels did not score first. In fact, the Rebels quickly fell behind 2-0 on the opening two shifts of the game. But a mini rally began as Elise took the puck and fed Shann an on-the-money set-up pass for the first Rebels' goal. Less than a minute later, the Rebels tied the score 2-2 on an Elise goal with assistance from Angela and Shann.

Then the Rebels pushed ahead on the goal-assist combination of Shann and Elise with 5:30 left in the first period. However, the Capitals tied the score at 3-3 going into the first break.

The second period was the undoing of the Rebels as the Capitals continued to score at will and proceeded into the second break with an 8-3 scoring lead.

The third period started like the previous two periods with the Capitals getting the first goal. Down 9-3, The Rebels mounted a comeback as Karen scored a power play goal with an assist from Carole. Minutes later, the Capitals countered with a goal of their own.

Then Leslie surprised everyone, including the opposing net minder, with a shot on net from the right side for a goal. And just as suddenly, the Rebels' bench players erupted and cheered as Linda made a pass to Tanya who moved it to a waiting Karen for a goal just 13 seconds removed from the last one.

"Let's go Rebels" could be heard through the remaining minutes of the third period. Not to get off of the ice but to continue the rally. Sadly, the game ended 10-6 in favor of the Capitals, but the Rebels walked off the ice proudly knowing they were winners with a 2-2 overall tournament record.

Watch out Las Vegas 2001 - the Rebels are coming.
