This tournament consisted of thirty four teams competing in three divisions from cities in Canada and the United States. The teams were divided up into eight flights of four team each playing at two ice rinks. The four flights playing at the Ice Sports North Shore were identified as Ice Sports, Molson Canadian, Roots and Shoppers Drug Mart.

The Rebels played in the Shoppers Drug Mart flight. This flight consisted of four teams and they were, including the Rebels, the Planet Ice Cougars, Santa Cruz Spitfire and the Storm.

Game 1, May 26, 2000 - 8:30pm

The Rebels always seem to have a first game slow start and you never know what can happen because of this. A Rebels' moment occurred on an early shift against the Santa Cruz Spitfire.

Carole, starting her first Rebels' tournament at defense, wanted to score the game's first goal. Danielle was surprised by an inadvertent tip on net while Carole was trying to clear the puck from the crease area. The wild scramble in front of the Rebels' net and resulting save prompted Danielle to say "That's my Rebels!".

Second period action saw Karen on the left side of the net receiving a pass from Shann with the Spitfire's Elonie stopping the point blank shot. Later, Danielle stopped a two on one break with Carole defending. Meanwhile, Deanna prevented another Spitfire score with a sliding full body slide. Okay, it was a tripping call but it made the Rebels' TV Cam highlights.

The Third period continued the defensive battle between the two teams. Part way through the period, a big crowd backed up in front of the net with an initial shot knocked down. But the puck slowly rolled to the Rebels' goal line which saw Danielle pounce on it.

The game ended in a 0-0 tie with Danielle receiving the opposing team Santa Cruz Spitfire's Game MVP selection.

Game 2, May 27, 2000 - 9:00am

An early, rainy start was the call for the Rebels' second game of tournament against the Storm. First period action had Danielle come out of the net to poke check the puck aside from an incoming Storm skater. Then, Deanna grabbed the puck and skated out of the zone up the middle of the ice and shot high goalie stick side to score the Rebels' first goal of the game.

During the second period while in the process of a line change, Karen had a breakaway into the offensive zone on the left side. A Storm player took the angle forcing Karen wide but she centered a pass to Kristine. No score but an exciting play none the less.

Minutes later, Mary Beth centered out a defensive pass to a skating Lina. Lina then moved one on one to the Storm net for a mid shelf goal to give the Rebels a 2-0 game lead. It must have been the new hot pink tape on Mary Beth's stick that caught Amber's eye to setup the play to get the second assist on the play.

As the period wound down, the Storm roared into the zone after the Rebels had effectively killed off a tripping penalty. However, a shot from the point plus a somewhat screened Danielle made the score 2-1 to end the second period.

The third period continued to feature a lot of skating between the circle with both teams being offensive stymied with the tightly played defense. A little more than two minutes elapsed in the third period saw the Storm's eventual game MVP score on a shot high from the left face-off circle.

The game ended in a 2-2 tie with Amber receiving the opposing team Storm's Game MVP selection.

Game 3, May 27, 2000 - 5:00pm

The last game of the preliminary round in the Shoppers Drug Mart flight featured the Rebels against the home team Planet Ice Cougars. Both teams played good two way hockey with many scoring chances by each offensive squad while the defense and netminders kept the opponent scoreless.

A rush up the right boards had Angela scoring on a pass from Shann. With less than three minutes in the second period, Karen rolled the puck to Shann at mid ice. Shann skated to the face-off circle dropping the puck back to Lina who skated left to right through the points turning in and shooting on net for the Rebels' second goal.

After two and a half minutes played into the third period, the Cougars mounted an attack into the Rebels' zone along the left boards. The Cougars scored as a disappointed Danielle tried to cover up the puck as it slide under her pads after the initial shot stop. The Rebels finished the period with several rushes into the Cougars' zone but were not able to add another tally to the score.

The game ended with a 2-1 victory with Lina receiving the opposing team Planet Ice Cougars' Game MVP selection.

The Rebels' 4 pts (1-0-2) qualified the team as second place to the first place Storm (1-0-2, 4 pts) based on the first tie breaker of least penalty minutes (Rebels 12 to Storm 8). Next, the Rebels were ranked amoungst the four flights playing at the Ice Sports North Shore with second place preliminay round finishes. The Rebels' Division B ranking was third seed.

Game 4, May 28, 2000 - 12:00pm

As J.J. explains...
The Rebels' fourth game of the tournament was a hard-fought, tough, three scoreless periods. Because of the unusual playoff format, the Rebels had not faced anyone from their new Division B in the tournament. The Boise Hericanes were much faster and more aggressive than any of the teams previously played. In response, everyone on the Rebels "stepped up" their games. Despite having a 5-on-3 power play, and giving them two power plays, regulation play ends in a 0-0 tie.

The OT format is as follows:
* 5-minute, stop-time, sudden death (winner take all)
If still tied, then,
* Shoot-out (5 shooters each side)
If still tied, then,
* Shoot-out (first to score wins)

The five minute overtime period starts with my line (J.J.-Tanya-Kristine) taking the initial face-off. We win the face-off, then break into their zone. There is another face off in their zone, the right wing (Kristine) on my line picks up the puck, which ends up in front of the net. 30 seconds have elapsed in OT.

The goalie and one defense are DOWN, on the ice, on the right post. I'm camped out on the LEFT post. The puck is laying down, flat, inches from the goal line. Half the net is OPEN. I look down, visions of glory running through my head. I am cheering. But wait- I have HANDS of STONE! While this is happening, the other defense comes flying in and tips the puck into the left corner.

The play moves out of the zone and continues back and forth for the next two minutes. We now have less than two minutes remaining in OT. Play moves into our zone. After a fabulous save, Danielle has the puck under her leg pad, but her pad is not fully on the ice. An attacker pokes it, and puts it in the net for the score.

The game ended the Rebels' tournament winning streak at three games with a 1-0 sudden death overtime loss with Danielle receiving the opposing team Boise Hericanes' Game MVP selection.

The Oregon Bandits were the hosts to the Rebels in the fifth game of the tournament, the Division B Consolation game. This game had the Rebels playing without J.J., Jill, Mary and Mary Beth as they had to leave early due to flight plan conflicts with the tournament schedule.

Game 5, May 28, 2000 - 4:00pm

Many rushes and shot on net by both teams occurred during the first period. The last rush of the period had Danielle making a save using the handle of her stick to push the puck out of the crease area.

The second period continued where the first ended with offensive rush after rush into the opposite zone by each team. However, the Rebels had to kill back to back penalties at the end of the period.

After killing 67 seconds of Bandits 5-3 power play at the beginning of the third period, the Rebels controlled and cycled the puck in the Bandits' zone with a shot clanking off of the left post. The puck squirted out to the points moving left to right as Traci shot the puck through a crowd for the first score of the game.

The Bandits pulled their goaltender with 1;15 on the clock. Then they called a time out with 22 seconds left on the clock. And it would not be Rebels' hockey unless there is some form of controversy. The clock was reset to 5:22 as the third period should have been clock set to 15 versus 10 minutes. Shouts of "Let's play Rebels' hockey!" focused the bench after the clock announcement.

26 seconds later, the Rebels scored on an Amber goal with an assist from Kristine. "More time means more goals" could be heard along the Rebels' bench. Less than a minute on the clock, a pass from Karen to Angela moving left to right. A shot on goal by Angela extended the Rebels' lead.

The game ended with the Rebels' winning the Division B Consolation with a 3-0 victory and Traci receiving the opposing team Oregon Bandits' Game MVP selection.
