This year's tournament had a music-based theme as the four pools
were named Country, Jazz, New Wave and Rock
& Roll. The Rebels were placed in the Rock & Roll pool with
Ice Angels from Carstairs, Alberta and the Shooters
from Cranbrook, British Columbia, Canada.
Each of the twelve teams were scheduled to play the other two teams
in its pool to determine the playoff division ranking and game
schedule. The Rebels first two games of pool play were scheduled
on Friday at 8:15pm and Saturday at 9:30am.
Game 1, April 6, 2001 - 8:15pm
The Rebels' opening game opponent of the 4th Annual Ladies Recreational
Hockey Tournament was the Ice Angels from Carstairs, Alberta.
Wearing their home white uniforms, the Rebels quickly jumped on the
puck and began assaulting the opposing netminder with repeated shot
after shot. Less than six minutes into the first period, Jeanne
feed an outlet pass to a breakaway Karen on the right side of
the ice. Karen then proceeded to the net and pounded home the first
goal of the game for a 1-0 Rebels' lead. Minutes later, Shann
scored an unassisted goal off of an Ice Angels' poke check from the
left face-off circle.
The second period featured a 14 shot net attack but both teams were
held scoreless as the Rebels continued to maintain a 2-0 lead.
The Rebels turned on the fire power as the team's shot total climbed
over twenty. Then with a little more than five minutes left in the
period, Shann proceeded to setup Angela for a backhanded
five-hole tap in to finalize the game scoring and a 3-0 Rebels' victory.
After the game ended, the Ice Angels fell to the ice as a team and
proceeded to make "ice" angels on the skating surface. This later
became their signature ending after each game regardless of score.

Game 2, April 7, 2001 - 9:30am
The Rebels' second game opponent of the 4th Annual Ladies Recreational
Hockey Tournament was the Shooters from Cranbrook, British Columbia.
The Rebels, wearing their road teal uniforms, fell quickly behind as
the Shooters began assault on the net. Danielle was able to
stop the first three shots but an uncleared rebound lifted over the
glove side gave the Shooters a 1-0 first period lead.
Leading 15-1 in shots, the Shooters began the second period short handed
on a too many men penalty at the end of the previous period. Unfortunately,
the Rebels were not able to fend off the Shooters' aggressive play as
the home team powered through with a wrap around goal off of the left
post to increase their lead to 2-0.
The game shots, 26-7 favoring the Shooters, revealed the game's play as
the Rebels struggled to keep the score close. Colleen had several
chances at making goals for the Rebels but was denied each time. Meanwhile,
the Shooters scored from a puck deflection to push their lead to three
goals. The final tally of the game came on a Shooters breakaway. With
Linda chasing the skater, a last effort stick hooking dive could
not prevent the score and the eventual three player pile up in the Rebels'
net.

The Rebels' 1-1-0 record after the two game pool play placed the team in
the B Division for the playoff round. The B Division consisted of
the Oakridge Shooters (1-1-0) and Mom's (1-1-0) from Calgary,
the hosting Airdrie Nutty Housewife League (1-0-1) and the Rebels.
Game 3, April 7, 2001 - 5:00pm
The Rebels began the playoff round play with third game opponent the
Mom's from Calgary.
The first period was a scoreless affair even though the shots were
decidedly favoring the Mom's 11-3. Strong defensive play was the
call for the period.
The second period saw the Mom's turn on the heat as they pounded the
net with thirteen shots and three scores including a coast to coast
run.
The Rebels' third period saw Elise, our game's first star, trying
to score on several rushes to the net. Shann, our second star,
was helping with back checking when not setting up the attempted scoring
chances of Elise. Meanwhile, third star Lina, lead the defense
with strong clearings or skating the puck out of the zone.
The Rebels' 3-0 loss to the Mom's did not reveal the team's character
of hanging in there even when outshot 34-8. The Mom's did acknowledge
this through the game ending handshake and wished us well in our next
game.

Whispers could be heard up and down the bench: "If they skate,
goals will come."
Could this be the Ice of Dreams? Colleen and
Elise thought so. They said they saw themselves skating the
final five minutes of the game scoring three goals including the
game winner in a dream Saturday night.
Game 4, April 8, 2001 - 11:30am
The Rebels entered the B Division consolation game against the
Oakridge Shooters from Calgary.
The Rebels skated onto the ice as the visitors with the road teal
uniforms for the third game of the tournament. As in the previous
two games, the Rebels quickly fell behind in game shots (11-2) and
were trailing 2-0 at the end of the first period.
"If they skate, goals will come."
The second period saw the Rebels coming alive as Karen had
a breakaway scoring attempt and Elise splitting the defense
for another scoring chance. A Rebels' 2-on-1 break up the right
side of the ice ended with Angela feeding a pass to the net
for a waiting Shann and mid net goal shot to make the score
2-1. But the Oakridge Shooters regained their two goal lead with
ten seconds left in the second period.
"If they skate, goals will come."
Down 20-6 in game shots, the Rebels exploded for four goals on five
shots in five plus minutes. Elise skated up the left boards
while Angela picked up the puck behind the net. Angela moved
to the right but passed the puck back to the left to a ready Elise
for the Rebels' goal. A minute later, Leslie made a defensive
outlet pass to Angela who in turn hit Elise on a breakaway
up the right boards for her second goal of the current shift to tie
the game at 3-3.
"If they skate, goals will come."
Almost two and a half minutes later, Karen had the puck moving
up the right boards and turned in to crash the net. Seconds later,
while falling to the ice, Karen managed to sweep the puck in past the
surprised Oakridge goaltender for the Rebels' first lead of the game.
To cap the scoring, Angela moved the puck back to Lina
in the right face-off circle for a slapshot goal and a 5-3 lead.
For their starting strong and rejuvenated final game period efforts,
the Rebels returned home to San Jose with their second Airdrie trophy
in two years and defended their seventh place finish overall of the
previous year.
"If they skate, goals will come." And so will trophies
and champions on the Ice of Dreams.
