The Rebels, travelling to Tucson, Arizona for its first time in team history, played in a four game, two day tournament under terrific conditions: 85-90 degree temperatures and pretty good skating ice. Our division, including the Rebels, was made of a group of six teams: Austin Roadrunners, Phoenix Inferno, Tucson Chilly Peppers, Tucson Chilly Peppers Too, and UofA Icers.

Game 1, May 25, 2001 - 6:00pm

Our first game of the 2001 Tucson Women's Hockey Tournament had the Rebels hosting the Phoenix Inferno at 8:30 in the morning for the tournament second scheduled game.

The Rebels took a 1-0 lead thirteen minutes into the period as Karen positioned a setup feed for Carole to tap in the game's first goal. Less than two minutes later, the Inferno scored and the game remained tied to the end of the period.

The Inferno took a 2-1 lead at the 7:30 mark of the second period. The Rebels countered as Mary Beth gave Jill a game tying goal pass at 14:25 and the score remained tied at 2-2 to the end of the second period.

The third period started out bad for the Rebels as the Inferno scored what turned out to be the game winning goal 30 seconds into period. The Inferno later scored two more goals to defeat the Rebels, 5-2, in its Tucson debut.

Game 2, November 10, 2001 - 2:30pm

The Rebels' second game opponent was the co-host Tucson Chilly Peppers Too, the "B" team to the Tucson Chilly Peppers (a team we have seen in Las Vegas since 1999).

The Chilly Peppers scored the game's first goal but was quickly awakened by the Rebels' scoring machine prowess. Liz tied the game 1-1 on an unassisted goal before Karen gave the Rebels a 2-1 lead on a Colleen setup pass. Elise scored the eventual game winning goal from Mary Beth's stick pass. The Rebels ended the period with a 5-1 lead on goals from Carole and Colleen.

The Rebels continued their assault on the Chilly Peppers' net as four more pucks hit the back of the net to turn on the goal light by Tanya, Colleen (#2), Carol and Mary Beth. The Chilly Peppers did get a second score but were behind 9-2 at the end of the period.

The Rebels dominated the third period as well by holding the Chilly Peppers to three shots while scoring four more goals on seven shots. Shann scored the Rebels' fifth unassisted goal of the game before Carole (#2), Mary Beth (#2) and Colleen (#3) goal scores closed out the period enroute to a 13-2 victory.

Game 3, November 11, 2001 - 10:00am

The Rebels third game, and first as the visiting team, was against the UofA Icers, a team we saw in Las Vegas in February 2001.

The first period had the makings of a defensive battle as both team struggle to get their team combined eight shots anywhere close to the netminders. Finally, the point-leading duel of Colleen and Karen ended the shutout to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead on Colleen's fourth goal of the tournament.

The UofA Icers outshot the Rebels 7-3 in the second period to take a 3-1 game lead in this seesaw defensive battle.

In an almost "nothing to lose fashion", both teams began an assault on the opposing team's netminder as a team combined 23 shots were faced in the third period lead by the UofA Icers 14 shots. Near the mid period mark, Elise surprised everyone with an unassisted goal to pull the Rebels within a goal. Minutes later, Karen (Rebels' #2 star of the game) scored the game tying goal on a timely pass from Colleen (who else?).

Julie earned her much deserved Rebels' Game MVP award by preserving the 3-3 tie and creating the opportunity for the Rebels to get back into the game with timely saves going down the stretch.

Game 4, November 11, 2001 - 1:30pm

The Rebels' 1-1-1 (3 pts) record placed the team in the Consolation Game against the Phoenix Inferno. Based on the rules of the tournament, this was a one game playoff to determine the third place finalists for medals. Unfortunately, our record eliminated us in participating for a first or second place trophy.

In a repeat of game one played at the tournament, the Rebels scored the first goal of the game by the now center Liz with help from Mary Beth and Jill on the play. The Rebels' defense held the Inferno to one shot on goal for the period (a tournament low for the opposition).

The second period saw the Inferno pick up the pace a bit as they were able to work they way through the Rebels' defense to get six shots on goal. However, Julie continued to play strong in the net and stopped five shots but the Inferno tied the score 1-1.

Not wanting to lose this game like the team had done in the third period of the first game, the Rebels matched the Inferno shot for shot on net in an attempt to control the flow of the game. At the 6:35 mark, Elise performed her skating magic as she scored her second unassisted goal in as many games to give the Rebels a 2-1 lead. Minutes later, the points scoring duel of Colleen (5G/4A) and Karen (2G/6A) connected again with an insurance goal by Colleen on a Karen setup pass.

The 3-1 final score over the Inferno gave the Rebels a third place finish in their first trip to Tucson.

Tournament Results

The Rebels had played this tournament, like the previous tournaments, with a slow start but improving as each game passed. We had surprised ourselves with a 13-2 second game win as the team had never scored in double digits in tournament play.

The Austin Roadrunners team came in first after a final against the host Chilly Peppers "A" team. Congratulations to the Austin Roadrunners!

Finally, this was a very well run first time tournament with decent refereeing, good ice and the other teams playing were nice and good sports on the playing surface. A Rebels' "Thank You" goes out to the hosting Tucson Chilly Peppers and the Tucson Women's Hockey League for a job well done in their first ever tournament.
