This year's tournament had a television cooking show based theme as
the four pools were named Food 911, Iron Chef, Emeril
Live and Good Eats. The Rebels were placed in the Food 911
pool with the Lightning from Forestburg, Alberta and the Babes
on Blades from Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Each of the twelve teams were scheduled to play the two teams in its
pool to determine the playoff division ranking and game schedule.
The Rebels first two games of pool play were scheduled on Friday at
8:15pm and Saturday at 11:00am.
Game 1, April 5, 2002 - 8:15pm
The Rebels' opening game opponent of the 5th Annual Ladies
Recreational Hockey Tournament was the returning team
Lightning from Forestburg, Alberta.
Wearing their home white uniforms for the first game, the Rebels began
the game slowly trying to get a feel for the game's flow. The Rebels'
second line out on the ice started the scoring as Carole made
a pass over to Liz who in turn went coast to coast to give the
Rebels an early 1-0 lead. A minute later, the Lightning scored to tie
the game 1-1. Nearly ten minutes later, the Lightning scored again to
take a 2-1 lead into the break.
The second period featured a defensive battle as both teams were held
scoreless but the Rebels continued to trail 2-1.
The Lightning scored the first two goals of the third period to take a
three goal lead. However, the Rebels countered to make the score 4-2
with a late goal by Carole as she had banked the puck in on a Lina
setup pass. The period ended with no additional scoring even though
the Lightning did provide opportunities with several penalties late in
the game.

Game 2, April 6, 2002 - 11:00am
The Rebels' second game opponent of the 5th Annual Ladies
Recreational Hockey Tournament was the Babes on Blades
from Regina, Saskatchewan.
The Rebels, wearing their road teal uniforms, greeted the newcomers from
Regina with tighter play than in the previous game. The more physical
play included a tripping penalty by Julie near her goal crease.
The Rebels' penalty killing unit did not allow a score but would be tested
three more times before the end of the game.
Meanwhile, Lina drove to the net late in the first period to start
a scoring chance. A quick series of passes between Elise, Shann
and Angela allowed Lina to get into position to score the Rebels'
first goal of the game.
Nearly the same time in the second period as to when the first goal was
scored, the Rebels scored again. This time, a nifty breakout pass to
Lina had the puck moving. Lina continued to skate through the defense
and wristed the puck over the goalie's stickside from the right circle
to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead at the end of two periods of play.
Third period scoring featured a breakout pass to Elise. Similiar to
Lina last score, Elise skated through the defense but had a trailing
Angela. A quick pass from Elise and a shot on goal from the right
faceoff circle by Angela gave the Rebels a 3-0 lead. Penalties given
to both teams in the final minutes preserved the score for the Rebels'
victory of the tournament.

Our Pool ended with a three-way tie at 2-pts as each team won and lost
a game. A tie breaker rule of Goals For minus Goal Against (GF-GA) was
used to set the ranking for our pool.
Tie Breaker
Team ---- Record PTS GF-GA =Diff
San Jose L-W 2 5 4 +1
Forestburg W-L 2 5 5 0
Regina W-L 2 3 4 -1
Based on the tie breaker ranking, we made the A Division for
the top 4 qualifying teams in the tournament. (One division higher
than in the previous two years!)
The A Division consisted of the Red Deer (2-0), Swift
Current (2-0), the hosting Airdrie Nutty Housewife League
(2-0) and the Rebels (1-1).
Game 3, April 6, 2002 - 5:15pm
The Rebels began the playoff round play as the home team. Our third
game opponent offered a second new team to the tournament from Swift
Current, Saskatchewan.
Unlike the first two games, the Rebels did not score the first goal
of the game. Swift Current, like their name, moved up and down the
ice very quickly. Their first goal of the game was on a 3 on 2 break.
The shot hit Julie while defending the crease but trickled in
for the early 1-0 Swift Current lead. Swift Current scored later in
the period to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
The second period had both team scoreless but the Rebels' were trying
to fend for themselves to stay in the game as the penalties killers
had to come out three times to stop Swift Current's power play action.
The Rebels lost the game 3-0 on a late score by Swift Current. Even
with the loss, the Rebels were already assured no worse than three
postions better than the previous years' seventh place tournament
finish.

Game 4, April 7, 2002 - 1:00pm
The Rebels entered the A Division consolation game against the
host team, the Nutty Housewife League from Airdrie.
The Rebels skated onto the ice as the visitors with the road teal
uniforms for the team's final game of the tournament. As in the
previous game, the Rebels quickly fell behind trailing 3-0 at the
end of the first period. A breakaway and an odd man rush were
responsible for creating the home team's second and third goals.
After successfully killing off eight power plays through three
games, the Rebels gave up an early power play goal in the second
period on a holding penalty. The Rebels did not allow another
goal for the remainder of the period but trailed 4-0 after two
periods.
The Rebels were held scoreless in the third period as Airdrie
collected two more scores for a 6-0 victory final. The first on
a one on one play with the shooter deeking the defense to turn
out while turning in on net. The final score was a power play
goal created on a tripping penalty by the Rebels' defense.
For their efforts, the Rebels returned home to San Jose with their
first A Division - B Runnerup award and a fourth place
overall tournament finish. The Airdrie tournment has continued its
reputation to be enjoyable, fun and competitive.
