English 11 Advanced Placement is a rigorous course for college-bound juniors which emphasizes writing, critical thinking, and literary analysis. Students study the entire body of American literature, while preparing for the AP exam given at the end of the year. Letters, diaries, autobiographies, novels, short stories, poetry, and plays will be sampled in the class. Students will complete a full-length research paper on an American author. In addition, students will learn the art of oral presentations. Class discussion is an integral part of the learning process, and will be emphasized as well. Practice AP multiple choice questions and timed essays will be graded and will contribute to a portion of the final grade. The Mid-Term exam will be an abridged AP exam. Students are given a monthly calendar and are expected to work outside of class to prepare for the AP Exam given in May. 10H and teacher recommendation is required.

English 11 Course Description:
The eleventh-grade student will be able to make and analyze persuasive oral presentations, with attention to the accuracy of evidence and the effectiveness of delivery. The student’s appreciation for literature will be enhanced by the study of American literature, both classic and contemporary. The student will be able to identify the prevalent themes and characterizations present in American literature which are reflective of the history and culture; furthermore, the student will identify the contributions of other cultures to the development of American literature. The student will be able to write clear and accurate business and technical correspondence and reports for research and other applications in all subjects. The student will develop expository and persuasive compositions by locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and citing applicable information with careful attention to organization and accuracy.
