The Malta Song For Europe Festival 2001
was held in the Mediterranean Conference Center at Valletta on Friday 2nd
and Saturday 3rd February. It was hosted by Louise Tedesco, Claire
Fabri & Antonella Vasallo. The winning song was chosen by 7 experts (3
Maltese, 1 from Greece, Denmark, Germany and the UK) plus televoting
(which counted as the 8th juror). 46,300 televotes were cast, and Fabrizio
Faniello won the televote.
The winning song is "Another Summer Night"
(Singer-Fabrizio Faniello, Composer-Paul Abela, Lyrics- Georgina Abela),
in second place came "Spellbound" (Singer-Ira Losco,
Composer-Philip Vella, Lyrics-Gerard James Borg), and third was
"Count On Me" (Singer-Lawrence Gray). You can give you opinion
on the song by participating in the poll. Here is the final classification
together with my comments:

Deserved
winner. A young man combined with four stunning young ladies and a
simple song provide the perfect package for Malta. |

Spellbound |

Ira Losco |
Is not
worth second place in my opinion. A good song but was at least
below two other songs in quality. |

Good
ballad in typical "Lawrence Gray" style. Song is
excellently delivered. Should have come at least second. |

Ira Losco |
Nothing
special. Just an average song by a good singer. |

Again
this falls under the "nothing special" category. It
lacked the necessary twist that makes songs special. |

Gray |
The
lyrics were excellent, the song was average but it is clear that
some jurors did not appreciate this ballad. Perhaps it's time for
Gray to move on and adopt a new style although some might say that
his voice is made for this type of songs. |

A
promising song with a catchy tune. It should have come at least
fourth. |

This is a
very good song with an impressive melody. Ira's performance was
again flawless. |

This song
should have come at least third. Fiona did an excellent job and
her cool performance was one of the best on the night. |

Not a bad
song and another one which falls in the "nothing
special" category. |

Ira Losco |
Ira
continues her marathon with this slow ballad which is quite good
to listen to but appears very ordinary on stage. |

This was
a very high quality song and it would have certainly won the
festival up till a few years ago. Unfortunately for Julie, we are
in 2001. |

One of
those entries which should be quickly forgotten. Deserves this
place. |

This
three minute song seemed to last six minutes to me. Extremely
boring song. |

This
strong ballad did not deserve this low placing but it certainly
did not raise any houses on fire. Interestingly though it seemed
to find favor with foreigners in the messageboards. |

I don't
have any comments regarding this song except that I did not
like it and that it deserved last place. Again, some people
in the messageboards found this song appealing. |
