The Sanctuary of Apollo
Now we are ready to travel north to Delphi. Perhaps the most famous site in Classical Greece, it is the home of the Sanctuary of Apollo. Of central importance was the Oracle of Apollo, whose utterances influenced the decisions of cities and states such as Athens and Sparta. Rich gifts dedicated to the gods were placed by the states in treasuries that lined the Sacred Way. Let's walk up the marble steps to the ancient theater and the well-preserved stadium. Our last stop is the museum which houses the beautiful "Charioteer" statue, along with other treasures discovered during excavations.

We are anxious to go to the port city of Piraeus. Piraeus was originally established by Themistocles in the early 5th century B.C. It has been the port of Athens throughout history. It remains one of the most prominent ports on the Mediterranean Sea (in the peak season, up to sixty ships depart the harbors daily). The pleasant seaside ambiance of Piraeus complements the City's attractions and unique cultural tradition. We must say good-bye to Athens and the surrounding area now, for this is where we board ship and sail to the beautiful islands of Santorini, Rhodes, Patmos, Mykonos, Lindos, Delos and the exotic cities of Ephessus and Istanbul, Turkey.
