Q. Why is it that all my favourite books end up under the bed?
A. Because I've never got enough bookshelf space, that's why (well, and because I do most of my recreational reading horizontally, and I get through a lot of books, and I hardly ever tidy up the bedroom -- but let's not go into that). Anyway, there are books all over the house, and the ones that I re-read most frequently tend to end up under the bed. It's good really: when I finally do get around to cleaning up, it's, like, "Whacko! Haven't seen this one in ages!", so then of course I have to have a lie-down while I happily read it again, and the cleaning up never gets finished...
The bookshelf lists on these pages do have a kind of logic to them:
- All the titles listed live on my bookshelves (or used to but I can't find them, or some wretch borrowed my copy and never returned it), except for those that I borrowed from someone else and liked so much that I'll probably get my own copy sooner or later.
- I haven't attempted to list ALL my books, of course, or even all the titles by a particular author that I own, just the ones I especially like.
- I have a few current favourite popular authors who write books in series. I haven't listed every title for these, just the series.
- Favourites come and go and tastes change. I haven't included some authors/books that I used to be mad about but have now got over. (For example, I used to have every one of Kurt Vonnegut's and John Irving's, but apart from one or two titles I wouldn't know what happened to them all).
From time to time I'll add reviews of new books I acquire. If they're decent enough that I want to re-read them, I'll add them to the list (when I get around to it...maybe).
