Energy Gels
Gels provide runners with an execellent, easy to carry, source of energy for your long runs. Take
one before your run or race and then one every 45 minutes during your run. You can also
down a gel right after your run or race to aid in recovery, but I prefer a recovery drink such
as Endurox® R4 or bioFIX.
It is hard for me to suggest one gel over another: all three products are great. The PowerGel®
pack is bigger and contains more
carbs, GU® has more anti-oxidants, and the Clif® Shot® contains natural ingredients...at least
the ingredients are easier to pronounce. Two minor considerations: the GU® packet fits better in that
little key pocket in your running shorts, and the Clif® Shot® has that neat Litter Leash.
Don't forget to drink some water after consuming a gel...your stomach will need a little help absorbing
all those carbs.
Remember, everybody's system is different and your body may need to get used to running with some of these products
in its stomach, so make sure you train with any sports drink or gel
before you race with one.

Clif® Shot®
Brown rice syrup provides the calories in these gels. I like the fact that I know what that is. It goes
down easily, acts quickly, and tastes great. I also like the litter leash. It seems hokey, but I hate
to litter and I never worry about dropping the little tab after I open a Shot.

GU®
The calories in GU® come mostly from maltodextrin, but also from fructose. In addition to providing
branch chain amino acids, GU® includes a substantial dose of vitamin C and vitamin E to aid in
recovery. This is a great product.

PowerGel®
PowerGel® includes maltodextrin, fructose, and dextrose to provide you with energy during your run.
It also includes amino acids and anti-oxidants. If your stomach can handle the larger dose (41g) then
this may be the product for you.
