Community Baboon Sanctuary
The Community Baboon Sanctuary was the
first of many community groups in Belize that have formed for the
purpose conservation of wildlife. It was established in 1985 to protect
the endangered black howler monkey, locally called "baboon". The
Sanctuary is maintained by
a grassroots, voluntary group of eight villages and many land owners
who
have signed pledges to protect the habitat for the monkeys. Visitors
can
view the howler monkeys in the wild. The Sanctuary is an easy 34-mile
trip
from Belize City, a good tour for cruise ship visitors.
