1987 marked the beginning of the Metal Gear Franchise with Metal Gear for the Japanese system, MSX 2, along with a sequel, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. After eight years of silence, Metal Gear was ressurected as Metal Gear Solid for the PSX.

Metal Gear: Released 1987(Japan, MSX 2; Nintendo) and 1988(US, Nintendo).

The year is 1995. Deep within the jungles of Africa, an armed fortress nation, Outer Heaven, has surfaced. Sent in to investigate this threat, FOX-HOUND agent, Frank Jaegar, codenamed Gray Fox and the only member of the organization to receive the codename "FOX," is captured. His final transmission was, "Metal....Gear!" Urgent to find out what this Metal Gear is, FOX-HOUND's Commander in Chief, Big Boss, sends in rookie agent, Solid Snake. His mission is to infiltrate Outer Heaven, rescue Gray Fox and captive scientist, Dr. Pettrovich, and send information about this "Metal Gear." All goes well with the rescue of Fox and Pettrovich but, before his departure, Fox informs Snake of Metal Gear. It is a nuclear equipped walking battle tank, capable of delivering an accurate nuclear strike from any terrain on the planet. After freeing Pettrovich, he learns how to destroy it and heads to the underground base where it is stored. After facing many traps and some of Outer Heaven's best Mercenaries, Snake makes it, tired and exausted, to the 100 floor basement of Outer Heaven's base, and encounters the mechanical beast, Metal Gear. After a tiring and deadly battle, Snake succesfully defeats Metal Gear. However, all is not right. From out of the shadows, FOX-HOUND's Commander In Chief, Big Boss emerges. Apparently, Big Boss had been the leader of Outer Heaven and sent Snake in after, sure that he would fail. Boss activates the self destruct feature in the base and challenges Snake to a fight, free of ideology and politics. After he defeats Boss, Snake manages to exit, and Outer Heaven is no more. It's remnants burning behind him.

Metal Gear 2 - Solid Snake: Released 1990(Japan, MSX 2)

The year is 1999. Heading into the 21st Century, the world faces a crisis. The supply of petroleum is at a dangerous low. All seems lost for the world's economy. But then, a Czech scientist by the name of Kio Marv found a solution. Creating a microorganism by the name of OILIX, capable of transforming regular petroleum into a highly purified form of petroleum, the hope of restoring the oil supply was high. However, when Dr. Marv suddenly vanished, that hope was lost, once again. Frantic to find Marv, nations began their investigations and a name came up...Zanzibar Land. Special Forces Unit FOX-HOUND called upon Roy Campbell, former Commander of FOX-HOUND, to find the one man that could put an end to Zanzibar. That man was the man who single handedly defeated the legendary warrior, Big Boss, four years ago; Solid Snake. Heading into Zanzibar, with the help of CIA agent Horry, Snake discovers some shocking information from Dr. Pettrovich, who was also held captive once again. He told Snake that Metal Gear was once again being constructed and the man behind Zanzibar was Big Boss. Snake managed to help Pettrovich escape however, as the doctor was crossing a bridge, a missile strike blew Snake back, and Pettrovich was again taken away. Suddenly, Snake hears a familiar voice. "Hey Snake, we're good buddies! I can let you go. Just leave here at once." It was Gray Fox, former member of FOX-HOUND, who disappeared after the Outer Heaven incident. Snake managed to get away from Fox, and went to find Marv. However, he arrives only to see Marv die. Pettrovich explains that Marv's heart couldn't handle the extreme torture he was put through. Just then Snake receives a radio call from Horry. She tells him that Pettrovich was volunterally visiting Zanzibar to work on the new Metal Gear and that Marv was kidnapped according to his instructions. Hearing the news, Snake is attacked by Pettrovich but manages to take him out and retrieve the structural plans for OILIX. Once again, Snake is confronted by Fox, pilotting the Metal Gear. After managing to defeat Metal Gear once again, Snake goes face to face with his friend Gray Fox. However, Gray Fox is not ready to give up. He challenges Snake to a pure fight, barehanded in a minefield. It was not about hatred or duty. It was two soldiers, two friends on opposite sides. Snake manages to win, leaving his friend, Gray Fox, dead. Once again, the time had come for Snake to face off against the Boss. He had been waiting for Snake the whole time. Before their battle, Boss reveals to Snake that he is his father, a father Snake never knew he had. The two fight and Snake comes out the victor. However, Big Boss' words echo in his head. "The one who wins will not leave the battlefield until he dies, like a warrior should." Leaving Zanzibar a broken man, Snake disappears into the cold, snowfields of Alaska, into isolation. Until...
